Neck Adjustments

From philip4229 on 5/6/2012 6:05:43 PM

Ive looked over some of Toms various YouTube posts on adjusting the various aspects on a nechville banjo. My question is in regards to the neck. I know he makes it look easy, but have any of you folks done neck adjustments on your Nechvilles? How straight forward is it and is there anything I should know before I go about doing it?

Even I, Extremely Klutzy Woman, after watching Tom's videos on the Nechville website, was able to raise the action on her new Classic Deluxe. So easy to tighten the head & adjust the tailpiece to my liking, first time I haven't needed to take a new banjo to a local luthier for initial set-up. I'd just suggest working on a lightly padded surface, maybe a non-skid pad or a carpeted surface, just so you don't worry about scratching the banjo. If you have questions, let Al Price or Tom know, I'm sure one of them can chime in, too.

Tom puts the banjo face down on his lap and applies firm pressure to get the neck where he wants it and then nips it up with his allen key.
I've done it this way myself and it's always way easier than you think it's going to be.
Like the previous respondee I hate taking my banjo apart.
I'm going to Holland in just over a week and I'm seriously considering taking the neck off my banjo and sticking it in my luggage to re-assemble when I get there. I've seen Tom do this and it literally only takes him two minutes and he's back playing again. He doesn't even bother taking the strings off. :-)

I'm no luthier, though I work for Nechville. Yes, its that simple. Something in our brain wants to tell us otherwise. But it just is.

I'll jump in as well and say that it really is that easy. I've done it myself a couple of times. I just turn the banjo over, losen the screw in the neck, get it where I want it, tighten it up, retune the strings, and everything's golden. It takes just a few minutes. I don't often have cause to adjust the action, but it's nice to know I could fix it easily if things get out of whack.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I had to ask because the previous owner had switched to a 5/8 bridge and had Tom adjust everything down to that. I'm personally a 11/16 kind of guy. I feel like it gives the banjo a much larger pronounced sound..which is great for bluegrass. Also, from what I understand, Nechville's factory standard is an 11/16 bridge if I'm not mistaken. Once I switched it, I noticed the action seemed a little high. I measure the string height on the finger board at the 12th fret and it was just a hair above 1/8th. I'll give it a go. If I run into any trouble...which it sounds like I won't, I'll just give you guys a shout. Thanks!

It took 3 hands for 3 to do it. But once I had it in place and had my wife on board it was pretty easy. I pencil marked the current set up.
