Face it, many of us are approaching late middle age (say 60+) and our hands and fingers and shoulders are getting creaky as our short term memory. So here's a workaround: 1. Play only stuff that's short and simple on the low frets. 2. Play the harder stuff with the capo on the 5th fret instead of the third. Anyone listening will be impressed with the low sound of the open strings and equally impressed with the new wear marks you'll be putting on the upper frets. 3. Your fingers will thank you for using 9 gauge strings and no one will hear the difference.

One can do a lot of playing using only a couple of fingers of the left hand most of the time... esp. for old timey arrangements. Employing a capo to shorten the length of a longneck is always there for you to experiment with. And for some reason I like the sounds of my PSeeger longneck more than I like the sounds of most of the regular-length Vega Tubaphones I run into (that being said, my favorite banjos of all time are Tubaphone No. 9's)

As manual & digital dexterities morph thru the years, so can one's approach to making a musical statement with a five string banjo.
