Details of neck finishes. I have a '63 made around July. The neck has no finish left on it. It's down to the sealed maple with some hint of darkness on the peg head. Anyway of knowing if this was origonally a clear maple finish or the shaded mahogany? For example there is no heel cap.

	Ken LeVan says: 8/25/2014 1:17:42 PM If it's an Excel, it's going to have the 5th peg at the 9th fret, and it would have been blonde (most likely). Otherwise, it was probably sunburst, which would account for the darkening on the peghead
	Michael R says: 8/25/2014 2:14:32 PM It's not ann Excel. I understand that a bolnd finish could be speciat ordered. But I think someone just decided to remove the origional finish then lost intetrest
	Ken LeVan says: 8/25/2014 2:43:40 PM IMO, the sunburst finish Vega used on their longnecks was nicer looking than the blonde ones. They didn't like curly maple on longnecks for obvious reasons - no 2-way truss rods or carbon fiber in those days, so they gravitated towards straight grain. I'd think that sunburst is the way to go with the finish.
