Epiphone Long Neck

From wesrichards on 5/8/2014 4:19:53 AM

Can anyone say how the Epi version of the Gibson RB 180 compare?  I'm thinking about buying a 60s Epiphone with a masterclone tone ring.  Thanks.

while I didn't know that there was more than one model Epiphone long neck, I always liked the tone of the RB175...if it's a good one, I don't see how you can go wrong.
good luck,
john

I have the Epiphone version of the 180. The only difference is the shape of the peghead. But it does have a Mastertone - not masterclone - ring so that will a difference. To my mind, the 180 tried to win over Vega Seeger buyers, and lost!

Thanks for your feedback, gentlemen. I play a Wildwood Tubaphone and a '28 Paramount with a neck that looks like Seeger's self-built Ironwood neck. they both sound dull to me. My Rb 250 has an aliveness the others don't and I'm looking to duplicate that sound in a longneck.

RB 175 that is...

A lot of people like the 175. And there are plenty of them around. And I'll bet its light enough for an old man to play standing. Understand, I'm not an old man. But there is one living in my mirror. Can't figure that out.

I modified an RB175 by adding a goldtone bluegrass tone ring - sounds pretty close to the RB180. I wasn't aware that Epiphone made them. The only problem is the additional weight. A lot of people like the 175 because they are so much lighter. I have a velcrowed resonator I use for bluegrass

I'm hoping this one will be nice and light. I am removing the 4 Gibson/Elton tuners and selling them. I like guitar style pegs. Other than that and some cleaning, I will just play it and save up for a case

My Gibson got here today. I am wet sanding the finish checked neck with oil and 000 steel wool.
The pot will need some cleaning as well. The 50 year old mahogany is beautiful.
I sold the nice Elton tuners and tailpiece and will replace them with Kluson style pegs and a Kirchner t/p...trying to make a matching keystone knob for the 5th string.
The banjo is solid and nice and light...ordered a new case from Elderly.
I have one of Stringbean45''s mistral bridges for it and I plan to use the same weights of fishing line as on my Vega.

Use it in good health. That old mahogany and maple were wonderfully straight grained. I had a Gibson L-4 from the 1920s. Just beautiful when I got the gunk off.

If you have time, please tell me about that bridge. I'd not heard of them and can't seem to find one on the internet. Thanks.

This banjo sounds great with nylon strings. I know there are not very many players using nylon with long necks but, the Gibson pot really works well. I guess the 22 fret RB170 would also be a good candidate.
The neck is a little "clubby"...kinda v shape but, I like that
