My Ode has arrived!

From timmib on 2/13/2013 12:47:00 PM

In October I found an Ode I had wanted to have for nearly 50 years but life, as it will, kinda got in the way...  Anyway, it has arrived and feels and sounds as wonderful as I remembered.

There are some pictures here: http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/photos.asp?id=82488

With the encouragement of you I persevered and finally found a gentleman in Boulder who had this machine sitting in his closet.  We ended up having Tanya & Rick at OME inspect the banjo and confirm its age.  OME did the setup and some other things for me.  What with the snow here in CT I finally got it yesterday 2/12/13, and tuned it up today.  It sounds great!

I can not say enough for the help of Tanya and all the folk at OME.

Be well,

Kim

Good for you ! Good for Ome, too. That's a fine banjo; wish I still had mine.

Hi Kim --

Congratulations on your 'new' ODE! I see you've been playing since 1960. That's when ODE started! (I've only been playing since '65.)

That's a nice early ODE. (Probably 1962 or '63) It's a Model 33/Grade 1. It has the early "Series 30" Sand-cast 52-hole archtop rim. (Which Chuck Ogsbury says is HIS favorite ODE rim.)

The neck is Peruvian mahogany, with a walnut center lamination, and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. it has a truss-rod in the neck -- adjustable from the peghead. In the catalog, they refer to the peghead as the "Scroll" peghead. But around the ODE shop, they just called it the "Harpoon" peghead.

I'm glad you finally found an ODE for yourself. Enjoy it, the ODEs are terrific banjos!

Best -- Ed Britt

Thank you all! As you might imagined I'm really pleased. And thank you Ed for the background. I know little about adjusting the ODE. All I've had over these years was a Kay from 57 or 58. The OME folk evidently did some snooping and found that the instrument has been in Colorado all these years. They thought it might need some adjusting once it becomes accustomed to the more humid weather of CT.

I have finally had some real time to fiddle. I'm really surprised to find that it is my right hand needs a lot of work. The action is so light and precise that my habits built from the old Kay are ... let's say, not appropriate. It's wonderful. I'm starting almost from scratch with my right hand. Amazing and wonderful.
