Is there anybody out there?

From will1976 on 2/2/2013 12:59:20 PM

Hi Ladies & Gentlemen,

I have been tinkering around with Banjos for a little while. I have been trying both, Clawhammer & 3 finger styles (But mostly sounding like a Cat being strangled). To be perfectly honest I'm being drawn to CH the most.

I have a lovely Gold Tone Custom Long Neck, which is just waiting for me to improve. I don;t yet have the confidence to join my local folk nights. My favorite players would have to be

Dave Hum, Luke Kelly,Barney McKenna, Felix Sonnyboy Wilson (if you have never heard of him, then out it into youtube) & Tommy Makem. Sadly apart from 1 of these have passed on. My thoughts are still there for Mel & family, sorry to hear about Dave. He will surely be missed by all who knew him, or seen him play).

So, my question is this:

Are there any Banjo Players, the live if my locality?

I live in Lymington on the UK south coast, and I would love to hear from other players near me, no matter what their playing style, or taste in music.

Regards

Will

Hey, Will, I'm nowhere near you but I can make a suggestion. Take yourself and the LN banjo to that local folk club. Sit around. Watch what the other people do. Make some friends. Maybe pick up a playing tip or two. Everyone who has ever held a banjo is going through what you are. We all started at zero. Some of us get up to 100, some of us make it all the way to 40 or 45 on a really good day. Banjo folks the world over are a generally friendly lot. And they have long memories of their own beginnings. And leave the cat alone. Isn't his fault. :)

You can get the the Pete Seeger book - How to play 5 string banjo - and use his strum!
