Deering Boston LN

From wesrichards on 1/3/2013 4:44:28 AM

Anyone have any experience with this?  Anyone know how much it weighs?  I'm looking for a lighter instrument and don't like the Woodsong or any Gold Tone that I've tried.  Thanks.

I see the the Boston longneck lists for $2300, which, in my opinion is way too much to pay for a banjo with a steel pot. I've played a couple of standard-neck Bostons and wasn't that impressed. If it's light weight you want, I think I'd look into having Dan Pennington make you one with one of his all-wood pots.

How about a '60s Vega 'Folklore'. Light and great sounding. We have a couple for sale.

Sure, I could build you a long neck for half the price and weighs a good bit less.
Or, I make a drop in replacement wood rim for the Bostons. The steel rim weighs 4lb 5oz. and my wood block rim weighs 1lb 7oz. Lose almost 3 pounds.

I had one. I liked it but it was heavy. I wrote a review on it. Very, very adjustable, a little on the bright side but with a lot of volume

Gold Tone has a lightweight wood rim and some lighter tone ring choices. I had my LN reworked at the GT shop and it really reduced the weight but still sounds great.

My longnecks weigh 7 pounds WITH the tone ring. With a resonator it's 8+ lbs. with spoons it's less than 8.

A plastic, aluminum or STEEL rim has no soul, won't vintage or get better sounding with time.

Also somebody only believes in laminated rims or innovations, but you can wash your socks, but that don't make you a runner.

The sound is what you are after, I hope.

When others go to woodies or 'lightweights' it mean they are looking for something that may or may not exist.

I enjoy having two full octaves to play with my longnecks, very versatile with bluegrass, up picking or basic strum, frailing and clawhammer.

The woodsong thinks gold hardware and a black head are updates.

The sound is the most important thang, inlays don't play, they show.

One thing to consider is just volume, or the ability to play both loud and soft, using dynamics, less carpal tunnel. We have an aluminum banjo here to compare with.

I use this analogy:

Snap = Attack
Crackle = Sustain
Pop = Decay

You can see where a 'wet' (bluegrass) or "dry" ( old time) voice might come from.

I also use clawhammer out over the 19th fret without a frailing scoop, I get no scratches or hassle. The audience perks up when I do that.

It's authentic, you should have a banjo that plays those specs, or at least ask questions of those builders who are using steel or other alternatives like woodies or wooden rim caps to make tone on top of a laminated rim.

I support Dan's use of rim caps on block rims, he knows how to make the whole rim rattle and hum.

You shouldn't sacrifice anything, especially weight.
