Strings for a long neck.

From ThomNorman on 9/30/2012 8:08:28 AM

I want to put new strings on my long neck which still has the original strings.  I'd like medium gauge strings. Are there any brands that I should avoid for being too short?  Or better yet what is a good brand that will absolutely be long enough?  Thanks for any input.

I use medium-gauge D'Addario's. They are long enough and sound good to my ears.

Deering also has strings that fit. John Pearse too. Most of these folks will "mix and " match once you degvelop preferences. Alomost everything lighter than .024 will buzz on the 4th string.

Yup, like the others above, I use either D'Addario or John Pearse mediums. As far as quality and tone are concerned, they are both good and pretty much identical, and are plenty long enough.

Stelling mediums works fine for me.

I remember being dismayed that the Vega (by Martin) strings I bought are too short for a long neck. But that was some time ago...

I had the same disappointment with the Martin strings more than a few years back. Deering now owns the Vega property so that problem is gone. Deering strings are generous in length! Their medium strings use a .024 gauge for the 4th string which is prone to a buzz on MY '64 Vega with a custom nut (don't know about a stock nut or anyone else's Vegas). I usually have sets made up with a slightly heavier 4th string.

If I'm not mistaken, Martin still makes the Vega strings. They are still on the Martin website, and all the strings on the Deering website are Deering branded. If Martin got around to lengthening the strings, good going. Sometimes, they move at the speed of snails within glaciers.

Martins are too short, just stopped winding before the nut on the 4th string, tragic loss.
