Backyard Longneck

From wesrichards on 9/20/2018 5:21:02 AM

Attention fellow ancients!  I recently found a long neck that works for those of us with arthritic thises and thats.  It weighs around two pounds.(That is not a typo.)  It's from Backyard Banjo in Connecticut.

I want to write a review but the review forum doesn't have the "brand" and that seems to be a requirement.

Basics: $175 (that is not a typo) plus reasonable shipping.  Short-ish scale for a longneck. And its made out of unusual stuff. Like a wood "skin." and some kind of paper-cardboard-water main looking stuff for the pot.

No frills. Good tuners. Decent intonation. And quiet.  Good action. I mean REALLY good action.

It's no Vega PS-anything. It's not going to be.anything you play at your next stadium concert.  (What? You don't play big venues? Oh, right. Most of us don't.)

Most of all, it's fun and good looking and plain, undecorated and lifts like a helium party balloon.  Plus four days between order and delivery.  Good thing I was home when that happened.  Else the wind would have sent it to the next county.

Note: I have no financial interest in this thing, do not know anyone (if there's more than one) in the company and have been playing since 1953.

The Extra Long Banjo is 40" long, has 3 more frets below the 5th string starting point (total of 25 frets). Tunes in E major, often a convenient range for singing. With capo on third frets acts just like a standard banjo in G. Has screw eyes for attaching a strap. See and hear one at youtu.be/Z6M22I62L0Q

Must admit a hoop made in part of compressed paper threw me but hey anything that works especially for those not so able thanks to arthritis (or no longer playing stadiums).

Yeah, Cleitus that paper thing threw me, too when I first read it. But ya' know what? It sounds fine. Plus stadium gigs are overrated. I actually played one once. Of course, the place was empty and the foreman yelled at me to put the banjo down and get back to the broom.
