Hey everyone, just putting some thought into maybe visiting TN and KY next year (with my banjo of course!). At this stage I'm looking at a couple of weeks over late Feb and early March. I plan to do a driving trip starting in Nashville and taking the following route: Nashville - Knoxville - Middlesboro - Whitesburg - Ashland - Cirecleville OH - Lexington - Russell Springs - Bowling Green and back into Nashville.
It's kind of a big circle mostly through East KY. Will I have any trouble with snow that time of the year? I believe it might be tornado season to but I'm not overly concerned about that. Otherwise my next best option is later in the year around mid-late November. Your thought's would be appreciated.

You've always got a chance of snow in eastern Kentucky during that time of your. You've also got a chance of 70 degree weather as well. Unless your getting well off the beaten paths should be alright. Hopefully, you will be traveling north from Knoxville. I drove by jelico

I drove by jelico yesterday and southbound was backed up over 15 miles due to construction work, and that was at 9PM. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I could just take my chances. I've decided to begin and end the trip from Louisville instead of Nashville. It actually is a bit cheaper to get there and I'd rather start there anyway. I was thinking about making my way down to Asheville,NC with the time I'd save not going to Nashville.

Youll be ok as long as you dont head back on some of those old dirt and gravel roads in a snowstorm. Kentucky has alot of "0" weather also especially at night so be prepared for cold weather and ice. I would def in quire locally about certain roads in some of those mountain communities but as long as its not an extremely heavy snow storm, most of the interstates and main secondary rural highways should be cleaned off. Also be forewarned about high shoulders and embankments and curvy two-lane roads....and those coal and timber trucks fly at warpspeed down those mountains so be careful rounding curves on those hills...hug the white lines if you can and drive slowly.

western Kentucky is better....but the same thing...be wary of those old gravel and dirt roads in snow and ice...better to avoid them.

Hey thanks for the advice Erik. Thanks for the tips about the coal and timber trucks. I fly out this Sunday and head into the mountains the following Sunday. Looks like I might just see some snow mid-next week. I'll be checking out central KY so hopefully the roads should still be alright for travel. It's not going to upset my plans too much if I'm stuck somewhere for a day though.

Just remember to plan ahead and always inquire locally. This snowstorm heading through the central US could dump alot of snow or sleet/rain in the mountains of Kentucky as well...so just keep an eye on the weather. Central Kentucky shouldnt be too bad...they usually keep me pretty well cleaned off these days...it just depends. The rural counties dont have the resources alot of times so just keep an eye on the weather ;)
