took my first live lesson today

From Diablito on 1/7/2012 11:17:34 PM

i had my first lesson today with a live teacher. it was cool. he's some older guy that's been playing for about 50 years and has been teaching for like 30 or so years. his place was some jenky cabin on a lot with a bunch of other jenky cabins, and full with all sorts of stuff from banjos, mandolines, sheet music and sci-fi paperbacks. was very "backwoodsy" feeling. couldn't think of a more appropriate place. lol

he showed me basic techniques, gave me tips on how to hold and fret the banjo better and we went through a couple of songs in an hour. i never would've thought I would've picked up both of these songs in an hour. it's taken me like 3 months to get 1 song sort-of down. he wrote out the tabs in a booklet of blank staff paper I was told to bring, so now I can practice these tunes until our next lesson in a couple of weeks. as he was writing the tabs, he told me to keep practicing what we covered and would prompt me every time i got stuck, "next is first string, brush, thumb, first string hammer".

i highly recommend seeing an instructor, if even once. i felt like my skill level, if not my confidence, jumped a couple notches by just this one lesson.

a cabin with a banjo and books? sounds good to me! :) I'm glad you had this great experience.

Wasn't a river nearby was there ?? . Live teacher, way to go. Helps your progression a lot faster than trying to work it out by yourself. I still take a lot off the net and then go to my teacher who then tells me what I'm doing wrong, also why aren't I doing the lesson he gave me.
