Style to start out with and any good books/dvd/cd/videos

I've only started learning to play in the last couple of months, and really didn't know too much about banjos, and even less about the styles of play. I just liked the sound. after reading a bit on this site, it seems there are all sorts of styles. is there any particular style that would be good for a beginner? something you can progress in fairly quickly?
I once tried to teach myself classical guitar. after about 5-6 months, I still couldn't really play a song. i think it was a bit too technical for a novice, and frustrated at not progressing i gave it up. i don't want to repeat that with the banjo.

I've been playing Scruggs style (3 finger) using the Murphy Method DVD's. I was playing a song (Slow of course) within a day. Its worked for me. The DVD's spell it all out for you and their is no tab that you have to learn. Just memorize the rolls and fretting patterns and your on your way.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've been learning banjo for maybe 5 weeks and I do pick guitar. I am following "Banjo for dummies" course book and dvd. This introduces you to Scruggs and clawhammer techniques. I feel like I'm missing something tho. I've discovered that this banjo hangout site has some really good songs you can download and tab edit tool is really helpful as you can play along with songs at slower pace. I would be very interested in opinions of how a newbie should proceed an which books, dvds are best. There are not any banjo instructors within 70 mile of where I live (Michigan tip-of-mit) and one banjo camp next june. Thanks and I really appreciate any advice.

I a beginner too I have been playing for 5 months and I can already play 4 songs. I got the watch and learn banjo primer it comes with a cd that you can hear the song played at different speeds so you can play along. I pick information up better if I read it, then watch it. Although I know that they mad dvd's you can watch and learn from. Consider taking classes from an online teacher there on lots of good ones here in BHO. Also my best advice is take your songs a measure or two at a time get the notes down then move on. Memorizing rolls like cop551 says will help you pick up songs a lot faster. I do the same roll over and over again until its smooth and second nature. Also practice has been the key for me at a min. I make sure I can play for at least 15 min other than that I try to play for an hour or two everyday. It makes a difference! Good Luck!

ive been taking lessons since april this year in bluegrass style .. im told that clawhammer is suppose to be easier but i dont know.. just pick what you like and go for it .. im still trying to play not half as good as i want to be but .."IT TAKES TIME"

I just received my banjo from my husband as an early Christmas present. I've never played any musical instrument but am absolutely in love with the sound of the banjo. I'm determined to learn. He taught me how to play the first part of "Amazing Grace" and I am thrilled to be learning so quickly. The only thing I have literature wise is a banjo chord guide. I now know how to read music and am looking for some very simple songs I can practice with. Let us all not lose hope in learning! Everything is a process. Good luck !
