Soprano String Question

From dewbanjo on 3/16/2013 6:07:56 AM

I just finished my "project" (restoring a 90+ year old Uke).  It has wood tapered pegs.  I bought a pack of strings only to find out I purchased the wrong type: B F# D A...so should I be trying to use the thinnest gauge for wood tapered pegs??

Somehow the C chord just does not  sound right ...I've tried tuning to (My Dog Has Fleas)....

I'll get the right strings...just point me in the direction for gauge /type size to buy...

What's 'not right' about the chord? If your tuned ok, and assuming the bridge placement is correct, the only thing I can think of is maybe the action is much too high. Got any pictures?

Strings - any standard 'c' tuning soprano set. Lots of people like the Nylgut ones.

Hi Allan thanks for the reply...I'll try to get some pictures on my home page soon. When I restored the ukulele, the neck was very loose...not much holding it to the body. I kept the "well worn" nut... some of the problem I'm getting I think is from how I am fretting..... I am use to my concert size...need to practice a bit...maybe then I'll get a better tone.
