New Huber Arrived

From markus1022 on 2/21/2014 7:20:42 AM

Hey Everyone. I received my New Custom VRB-G on Wednesday and opened it last night as I needed to give it a day to adjust to the cold, dry Chicago area temps. I played it last night, it sounded great, I then adjusted the head to the recommended torque, it sounded even better. Joe posted pictures of it on facebook (the maroon and chrome ) a few weeks back and I knew I had to have it.

How often have you all needed to adjust the head tightness on your Hubers? Any other advice for a new owner?

Thanks,

Mark W.

When Steve sells a new Huber he includes a torque wrench in the case AND gives the torque number from that wrench he, used to get the best sound ( his judgment is pretty good in these matters). If you bought this banjo new from Huber Banjos this tool and information should have come with the banjo. If you bought the banjo from a previous caretaker (i.e. used) take a trip to Hendersonville to the shop and have Steve set it up - and record the data. You won't be disappointed. IMHO

Hey Mark. Thanks. yeah I did get it direct from Huber and used the wrench to adjust the head to what Steve recommended. I also used it to tighten the head on one of my other banjos and was surprised at how loose some of the nuts were. I learned something and will adjust more regularly now.

When I bought my Lexington from Steve 3 years ago, I was told to set the head to #10 on the torque wrench. That resulted in a G sharp note on the head. Mine sounds best at that tuning. I tune twice a year, summer and winter. Enjoy.

Steve tends to know how to make his "babies" sound best!

Since its new I would check it every 2-3 weeks for a while, till the head has finished settling. It doesn't take that long to keep in check. EE
