Present Huber setup

From BobbyE on 1/29/2011 5:47:00 AM

Hey Huber group.  Being in Africa so long really limites my exposure to any banjos, other than m own.  Wonder if anyone, or all of you, would care to share how you have yours set up, what strings you run, head tension on the drum torque Steve ships them with, etc.  Can you have a bad sounding Huber?  Didn't think so.

Steve recommends a drum torque setting of 6-7 kg/cm, I played around a little when I first got the banjo and prefered a setting of 8 kg/cm. Not saying I know better than one of if not THE best mind on these matters, It just seemed to suit my playing and my interpretation of how my banjo should sound.

I know Steve goes into detail on his Acutab DVD and shows just how he likes his banjos set up and also goes to extremes to show how to get whatever sound you like.

Exactly Bobby... I don't think you can have a bad sounding Huber ;) Seriously, my cousin has a Lancaster and when he visited last year, he hadn't changed strings in a year and his head was loose and that thing was still booming.

I use GHS 155s (10 11 12.5 20 10). I tap tune my head to a G# (although I've got the drum toruque and I think I'll try to use that soon). I've also got a Snuffy Smith bridge on mine.

Thanks for the replies Chris and Tony. I have Steve's DVD and will have to rewatch it at some point although I have seen it many times already. Good stuff and not just for Huber's either. I already use the 10 outside strings with the 20th fourth so sounds like something I am already pretty used to. Thanks again

I used to use D'addario J60's now which are 9, 10, 13, 20, 9 I used to use J61's which are 10, 12, 16, 23, 10.

The J61's have loads more bite but I switched because I wanted to lighten up my whole approach to playing. I had a nasty habit of overplaying on stage. It seems to have worked well for me.

I have used GHS for years. Usually get them a dozen sets at a time when someone comes out to Africa from the states and will bring them to me. Right now the outsides are 9.5 but I had a few 10s that I used before they ran out. I like the 10s as they have a bit more resistance than the 9.5. the JD Crowe set has been my choice for a long time.

I noticed Ron Block had a Snuffy Smith Bridge on his Huber on his Acutab DVD. My Lancaster still has the stock Huber Bridge on it. I'm loathed to change it because I love the sound of it as is.

What effect did the Snuffy Smith have on the tone of your banjo tony?

I have my head a little tighter around 10 but have had it as loose as 7. I use the Huber strings. Everything is still original on mine.

I just bought a Lexington. Steve recommended a head tension of 9-10 kg/cm using the torque wrench. Used Huber strings (10-11-.125-20-10). Tailpiece set high off head. Crisp, clear, throaty!

You can have a bad sounding Huber if you try real hard. An older gentleman that showed up at our local Opry had a Lexington that he dearly loved. Being a Huber guy he let me play it and was real proud. He had tightened the head so tight that the flange was flaring up. Before I could get to know him he passed away with a heart attack.
