a friend just gave me an 18" calf skin head which is pretty translucent. I'm thinking about bleaching it before mounting it on my resonator banjo. I've dyed heads before, but I have never bleached one...and suggestions?

So called "white" heads are made by stretching them until the fibers break, making them white (purely a cultural taste that american drummers preferred). I don't think they were ever bleached (which is a harsh acid). I would suggest that you just leave your head as it is. I don't think there is any sonic difference. tdennis classical drummer & banjoist

I do know that chlorine bleach makes wools yellower and brittle. and working with bleach without gloves really makes my nails split. I don't think it would do the hide any good. If you want to try it, run a sample on a scrap of hide, or rawhide doggie chew. Cut the piece in half and treat one piece with a bleach solution, Treat the other piece the same way, only leave out the bleach. I've never done it but it should be interesting. Right now, I'm out of bleach...have the hide scraps though. if anyone tries this, post the results.
