give me some skin!

From pastorharry on 4/14/2011 11:14:13 PM

Back to a Miller pre mounted calfskin head on my Gibson RB170, after every other head in the world. I took it off simply because it had pulled the tension hoop down too low as it stretched in our Hawaiian humidity. I remiedied that by cutting off the hoop on an old fyberskin and placing it over the calfskin head to make the head sit higher...voila-sounds great! I'll try to post a picture by and by. Aloha, PH

I ran into the same problem. I emailed Bill and he told me to loosen up the tension hooks and dampen the head and dry it with a hair dryer and it should tighten right back up . And that that this should not be a permensant problem after doing this. The head is being dampened as I type.

let us know how it works

Well it worked at first but trying to get the tension I needed eventually took me back to where I started. I may have been a little conservative in loosening the hooks. I try again later.

Well, back to the drawing board. I had the head nice and tight-everything was fine, but the weather must have dried up a bit, or got hotter . I took the banjo out of the case the other day and one whole side of the head was torn! Bummer, it sounded SO good! I have a ren head back on in the meantime as I re think the whole senerio.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the hide head Harry...

I'm crazy about them myself here in Tennessee. But I'll be the first to say that they are not practical in all situations. Don't sell your REMO stock just yet....

I redamped mine way looser than before, and it just seems to keep stretching back on me. Maybe I'm expecting more tension than what your suposed to have on a hide head.

Tomcat: What did Bill tell you to do?...just wet it and then dry with a hairdryer?

If I was trying to shrink the skin...I think I'd remove the hooks (or loosen them all the way). I might even pull the head up on the rim a bit (to reduce the crown height). Then wet it thoroughly and let it dry completely (like overnight) before re-stretching.

I've never tried that...but I hope it works for you.

I remember dropping my A.A. Farland in the swimming pool at Idlwylld and Pete Seeger diving to the bottom to rescue it. We put it in that hot, dry california summer sun and it instantly shrunk up tight as a drum.....not that I recommend that procedure!

I loosened the hooks almost all the way and layed a very damp cloth over the head untill it soaked up and was good and damp then dried it with the hair dryer.. It worked, but the head stretches back out.
