Greetings

From Dan B on 4/14/2011 1:54:14 PM

Greetings fellow skin head fans.

I just noticed this group, I`v been playing on unbleached goat skin since I got my Dobson/Bukbee

In a Galax parking lot 35 some years ago.

I`v had to replace it twice since than and used turkish goat skins both times. I`v never felt the urge to try anything else.

Last year I asked Tim Smith (aka Timmo) to replace the broken dowel on tne Buckbee and got a Rouge (Making fine instruments since 1981)

It came from Musicians friend with a fyberskin head... to say I was disapointed with the sound would be kind.

So my new project is replaceing it with a Yellowstone head I`m waitng for it to come by mail.

I`ll let you all know how that works out.

Glad to know theres more like me.

Dan B.

Welcome Dan,thanks for sharing your experiences.Good luck with the Yellowstone Dan. Man...that stuff is a bear to install. I had success with one install on an old Stewart. It sounds really nice. Still not the same warm tonal quality as skin IMHO.

Hi folks,

Yeah it took me three tries but I finaly got it.

The 1st try I got a real nice flesh hoop from Bill Miller

I`ll bet it works great for skin, not for Yellowstone.

So then I tried 14 guage copper wire but once Y/S takes a crease even a steam iron (remember them?) won`t take it out. I contacted Mr Ralston

And got a couple more pieces, I found that by cutting a piece of plastic milk jug and sliding it between the fold (between the rim and the inside of the tension hoop) I could pull out the wrinckls without hurting myself.

Looks and sounds pretty good though not as good as skin As you say)

But as a low maintance backup for my Old Girl (circa 1890 double spunover) its satisfactory.

Thanks to all you banjo nuts for being there
