I have five banjos, three of them have skin heads. I love the sound! On my Gibson I have what may be the original head it left the factory with in 1926, On my Vega Deluxe the skin head was on it when I bought it. On my Vega #9 I have an old skin head that came off of a pre-war Gibson.
They all sound fantastic and I don't think I'd use a plastic head on any of them while they are in my possession. I first tried a skin head on a friends banjo in the early 70's. I was so enamoured with the sound that I couldn't rest until I had one of my own. It was a long time but now I am a proud hide head user.
