To seal, or not to seal.

From kratty on 1/21/2014 4:15:48 PM

Hi all,

Making progress on my first gourd banjo build.  I am planning on a Waterlox finish for the neck.

Would you recommend applying the same finish to the gourd? If so, inside AND outside?

Or is Waterlox not a suitable finish/sealer for the groud?

I am sorry that no one has responded to your enquiry kratty. I have never heard of waterlox but it sounds like it is a waterproofing paint.

I painted the outside of my gourds with a clear lacquer as I like the look of the natural gourd.

The inside I painted with a water based flat paint just to seal it.

I've made three gourd banjo's so far and all were treated as above and no problems with any of them. My first one is at least ten years old.

Thanks for weighing in, CNK. Waterlox is a tung oil-based finish/varnish.

I can't see that that would cause any harm kratty, in fact it sounds like it would be helpful.

Do you apply any finish or treatment to the INSIDE of the gourd?

As I said above kratty "The inside I painted with a water based flat paint just to seal it."

Sorry. Read too fast and missed your comment. Sincerely appreciate it!

Do you think they used it in 1814?
