I am ready to start building my first gourd banjo.  A real journey into the unknown.  No plans to work from.  I am looking forward to learn from this forum.

Thanks for advising us of your plans Ian and Drew and I hope that you keep us informed of your progress. I have made three gourd banjo's so am no expert but building one is quite an experience and I am sure that you both will enjoy it.
I wish you both well as you proceed.

Thanks Nyal,
I really like the way you reinforce the gourd against, I presume, the shrinkage of the goat of calf skin. I have been wondering about this. A shrinking skin can exert a lot of uneven forces on the body of the gourd.

I'll take pictures of my progress.

The skin does cause pressure and so do the strings. The first one I made was not reinforced and the gourd was "bent" where the strings pulled against it. It has not broken (it's at least four years old now) but I reinforced the other two with no problems at all.
The pics on my post about strengthening the gourd are quite small. If you look at them on my home page you will get a better view.
I was away when you first posted here, hence the delay in commenting on your posts.
All the best Ian and Drew.
