I obtain a suitable vegetable from a web source that specializes in such devices. The opening is flat, level, and spans 9 and 3/4 inches.

I kept the seeds from my first gourd, planted them, and now I have around 20 gourds, most of which are suitable. I was surprised to discover that the next generation are not always true to type. So my second generation one is underway now.
