Might as well get my feet wet, I guess. Only 4 of us at this beginning and no one has written about owning or building these intrigueing instruments. So here goes.
I built my first one about three years ago. Used a 12 inch canteen gourd and a goatskin head. The neck is made from curley maple and I put three ivory stars and cut one into the gourd itself. Thestrings are gut and it has a great deep plunky tone. It plays well from its fret free neck. Used black ebony fiddle tuners for its five strings.
Since then, I have built six more, the present one about half done. You may look at them on my Hangout Homepage at
http://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/home.asp?id=25818
They are wonderful instruments to build and to play
