BG 250 f deal? or no deal?

From ol trashfire joe on 2/23/2022 7:18:15 PM

pre PS - to anyone who recogizes my name from the last post here, i fixed the cc100r with no issues. in fact, it is in better playing condition now than it was before i was forced to work on it.

The matter at hand..I am considering buying another GT bc even the cc100 i have currently is pretty rad. better than any Deering i have ever played tbh. it is a bg250f that i am considering. online i see used ghoing for 770+. i am getting this one for around close to half, a little over half plus shipping is what i will be paying. i guess i am asking if anyone has any experience with these banjos?? i know they are supposed to be masterclones, with a flange, but idk...i am quite limited in the spectrum of knowledge here. please help.

Hi Joe. The BG 250-f is not a masterclone and has no flange, just 4 attachment plates. The tone ring is rolled brass, not bronze.
It makes it a lighter banjo.
This is a great set of chrome hardware, and the Maple "voice" you get from Gold Tone.
If the banjo is used, I feel you can't lose.
I could jam with a banjo like this.
i already own an OB250 since 2005.
I do rim changeouts and build new banjos, many times with Gold tone hardware.
I have used MANY gold tone kit necks, 4, 5 and 6 string.
This banjo will be lighter on your shoulder 3 hours later.
This banjo doesn't need a heavy flange and bronze tone ring.
they state 8 pounds.

You could put a Helix type rim in there with the same tone ring and build a howitzer.
I enjoy that Gold tone doesn't just run the same shoe and plate type banjo up the price points with the same pieces of hardware for more money. They change upgrade parts for different price points.

My OB250 weighed at least 12 pounds with bronze.
If the BG250F was all I could afford, I would play it in and keep the sound you want.
Go develop your own specifications, Read.
Glad you got your CC sorted out.

I suppose I should have specified in the title, but it is a bg 250 F, which they claim does actually have a flange. And the description on their official website states it's a clone of the most popular banjo of bluegrass from way long ago (or something very similar to that) so I just assumed it was a master or a skruggs or something. They never actually tell you what it's supposed to be a replica of...??

Yeah, I just looked on banjo dot com and they say it's a die cast brass flange. I know they discontinued this model, but maybe the F model wasn't super popular...idk

Here's that link so you can read specs or whatever if you want.
