Tone Rings for late model maple Gibson's

From jRook22 on 3/2/2012 11:04:52 AM

Hey guys I am thinking about trying some new tone Rings in my 07 Granada and was wondering if any of you guys have tried any different rings in ya'lls Gibsons and what results you got. I am wanting to mellow it out a little bit. It seems like the older it gets the brighter the tone gets. I just recently bought a Huber Jim Mills model with the HR30 ring and it has changed my taste in tone. I have always loved my Granada but since I got the mahogany banjo I find myself not playing my maple banjos as often so thought I would experiment a little bit and try to get it to mellow out a little without losing the volume and pop you get with maple. I really want to try the HR30 but 800 bucks is a lot of money to spend to just try something new out. Anyways any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Judd

I sure like the Blaylock but it might be a little bright for you. If you don't like it I'll try to buy it off of you.

Cheap way to try out an HR-30: take the ring out of your Mills and throw it in the Granada? Just a thought.

From my experience the tone ring may not be the real culprit. The maple tends to produce a brighter tone than mahogany and that $800 HR-30 ring will probably not make it less bright. Most of the Hubers I've heard have quite a 'crack' to them. A less expensive fix may come with a different bridge and set-up. Back off on the head tension slightly and try a few different bridges. Also check your tailpiece/string dimensions. Ultimately I got rid of a Granada and found an RB-75VL. Good luck

I just picked up a ESS. Took it to Charlie Cushman. He set it up with a softer Snuffy Smith bridge. Took a lot of the maple edge off of the tone for $20.
