In September 1965 a friend dragged me to a "meeting" of the Folk Music Society at Loyola College in Montreal. I was beginning my third year. The meeting consisted of people standing around picking and discussing the music. Within a week I had gone to Eaton's department store and bought a Zen-On classical guitar (what did I know?) for $35. The players who saw it were quite generous with their comments on the guitar - not a negative word.

There were times when, out of frustration, I wanted to smash that guitar, but the music called louder than the roadblocks. Now, fifty years later, I may not be an expert player, but the guitar (and, later, the banjo and other instruments) has given me loads of pleasure and the chance to meet and/or pick with lots of great people.

dlaughery1013 says: 10/1/2015 1:46:32 PM In 1963 I picked an old, broken guitar from a trash barrel and made it playable and bought a how-to book. One year later I got my Kay banjo and Pete Seeger's book and I've been playing off and on since. Has gotten me through some tough times. Dave L.
	darwinyarwin says: 10/1/2015 3:47:51 PM My folks bought me my Silvertone 5-string (Kay) in 1960. I refurbed a TJ special guitar that year too. I worked construction all summer of '61 to buy an Ode long neck. I hung around backstage and learned banjo licks from Charlie Oyama and Alex Hassilev, and great guitar from Travis Edmonson . Folk music has taken me a lot of places since then; but the best place I remember was the time playing and singing around a beach campfire got me into Helen H.'s sleeping bag ... ;)
