Okay, I posted about this on the Open MIc group site, but here goes.
Saturday I played a benefit for the local Musical Instrument Lending Library. There were venues all over town, each for a different musical genre. I applied for and was accepted at the "folk" venue, The Public House, right downtown.
I recruited three others from the weekly Bluegrass Jam, Mary (Bluegrass banjo), Blair (mandolin), and Bruce (guitar). I played guitar and clawhammer banjo. While we were hampered by the sound system (three mics for four people), we were helped by a bunch of friends who were loudly supportive - a couple of cheering sections!
It was also a lesson in what "folk" means to different people.We played old-time stuff from the Twenties and earlier. We followed an act that played Ukrainian music - amplified. There were "singer-songwriter" types. And there were the sort of "folk's greatest hits" types. There was a Bluegrass band. Lots of variety through the day and night.
In the end, everyone played for a good cause, and the day pulled in a lot of money for the MILL. It's a good event where pros and amateurs can mix. Can't wait 'til next year!
