im new here to this group .. im attempting to learn banjo 5string, but i love cltic music how much harder is it than bluegrass .. and anyother suggestions..also ive just moved and im having a problem getting back to the banjo again.. any advice..

	g3zdm says: 9/18/2012 3:19:57 PM Do you already play any other instruments ? I wouldn't say Celtic banjo is any harder than BG or OT - just different. There are different rhythms to master and playing is mainly melodic - note for note with the tune rather than rolls and Scruggsy moves. It helps if you can read sheet music too as there aren't too many tablatures around for Celtic music - but some do exist that could accelerate getting into the rhythms and style. Also you will find many tunes in the key of Dmajor but they are often mixed in a "set" (usually of 3 tunes) between dmajor and Gmajor tunes. Therefore it helps if you can learn to play Dmajor tunes without using a capo so you can modulate (switch) from D to G and vice versa instantaneously - you'd lose a lot of the tune if you had to fit a capo in mid-set.
	peter somerville says: 9/18/2012 3:21:58 PM i'd have to say that's it's harder than basic bluegrass to play celtic on the 5 string. you could it's difficulty to perhaps melodic or single string style of bluegrass, but then some tunes are easier. good luck with it. there's a couple of books around. Tom Hanway's two books are a must, and I've got one as well.
