I see camps everywhere but none in Arkansas. You would think Hot Springs or Eureka Springs would have one.

Why not Mt. View? There's even a bluegrass program in the schools there. I'm a native Arkie living in Southern Illinois, but I'll drive to Florida for banjo camp this week. I'd much rather drive to any spot in Arkansas!

Me too Lew. I teach at one of the colleges in Arkansas just outside of Hot Springs and we have camps all summer. There's football camps, classical music camps, etc.

Maybe you could talk to people at your school and to some of the folks who organize banjo or bluegrass camps to see what the potential is--business-wise.

The Folk Center in Mtn. View has had lots of 'workshop' events over the years. I think Lukas Poole did a clawhammer event there recently.
Arkansas just hasn't quite caught the eye of the banjo camp folks.
Great idea....You might contact someone involved in these other camps, and let them know about Arkansas.

Thats a great idea Bill and Lew. I am certain we could host the workshop and/or camp on our campus. We have plenty of empty dorm space in the summer.

Perhaps to start we could call it a bluegrass camp to get more participation. Wonder if we could get someone like Bill Nesbitt from LR to spearhead the effort? I'd attend without the nationally known instructors and cost, but instead some Arkansas pickers and lower cost.

This comprehensive banjo workshop is ideally suited for beginner and intermediate skill-levels and will cover many, MANY aspects of playing banjo. We will address the individually-specific nuances of playing banjo that will help improve your playing! From hand-positioning, to rolls, chords, music theory and how to make it all work, we’ll offer up fresh concepts and approaches to help you master your instrument! We’ll help you advance your playing, no matter what level you’re at and no matter what learning challenges you’ve experienced. Even if you’ve never taken a lesson, or seen a banjo up close—this class is for you! We give each participant individual attention to work on things specific to you!
Some of the topics we will cover include:
Banjo playing basics--Getting the most results with the least effort
Basic music theory as it applies to playing banjo.
How to begin playing in jam sessions when you don’t know the music.
Playing Technique: Does it seem like you practice and practice and see little improvement? Sometimes, a subtle technique adjustment will make all the difference.
Fret-board geography: Includes Licks and lines, chords, scales and how to use them in your playing.
Three primary styles of 3-finger playing- Scruggs, Melodic and Single-String.
We will spend a fair amount of time on ‘back-up’ technique, so you can begin playing with others by the time you leave.
Basic instrument set-up—Chris is a master at banjo set-up and will help you get the most from your instrument. Tunes, Tunes, Tunes! Be thinking of music you want to learn.
Each participant will receive handouts of tablature and relevant work materials, as well as audio files with tunes we work on, both slow and medium tempo. It’s like 2-3 months of lessons in one day!
