Messed around with guitars and banjo ukes for years, but started 5 string in earnest in 2006, when I got the decent Deering.

Interesting this...so far we seem to have two rough splits here...
- folk who have been playing for maybe 1 to 3 years
- those who've been playing for over 30, 40, 50 years
Apart from Peter in 2006 :)
Curious pattern.

I have been playing on and off for 20 years. The first part was strictly by tab and a waste of time. Now getting lessons from John Boulding and listening to Scruggs on Amazing Slowdowner and finally starting to get it.

6 years (which is nothing) I figure it is gonna take probably10 more years to be able to learn the fretboard and play resonabley well. I agree with Greystock that the tab learning I did wasn't really the best for me, but am practicing listening with a slowdown software and doing alot of ear training now. Having the time-of-my-life!

I started in abut 73 but finally gave up about 15 years ago. Now at 71 I have decided to play it or sell it. I chose to play it and am trying to avoid getting into the negative mindset that made me quit before. Discouragement and inablility to play around anyone else. So far so good :D

Hey Jim -
Just found this site. good one. Been at it for
over40 years, but quit for 20 of it. started back
about 3 years ago and having more fun now
than when i was playing w/bands
