I did this back in August using super-permanent industrial sharpies on a Remos Renaissance head.  So far, I haven't had any issues with fading or rubbing off with playing for an hour or so every day.  Didn't seem to have any effect on the sound either.

I really like this. It has inspired me, and I'll probably ink or print (if I can figure out how) a similar image. I've decided I'm going to use something like one of these images: google.com/search?q=fisheye+tr...&bih=1731

That first one in black and white was actually my second choice. The only thing in was concerned about was that I didn't want to have any decoration in the area where my hand rests/touches a lot while playing. I haven't actually had any issues with the ink bleeding or rubbing yet, but I'm not sure how it would hold up with constant contact.

Since most heads are at least semi-transparent, you can print the design to the right size and tape it to the back side of the head to at least give you something to trace. I sketched mine on paper and traced it this way. It's hard to tell from the picture, but I the leaves on some of the trees and the grass are actually colored on the back side of the head, and let them show though in a slightly lighter shade. Also gives it some depth when you see it in person. The renaissance head is pretty translucent so it was perfect for that.

Good luck, let's see it when you're done!
