Jenes Cottrell Banjo

From cwdean on 11/4/2012 10:03:48 PM

Hi All!  I have a banjo that I made from the First Turbine Ring out of a 1955 Dynaflow Torque Converter.  I made this banjo in the style of Jenes Cottrell.   I first put the banjo together 5 years ago and kept making changes to it and finally made a neck for it 2 years ago.  I spent several years talking with those who knew Jenes well, and talking to some people who had his banjos.  When making my neck, I tried to replicate his inlay patterns and combined a few of his peg head patterns.  I wanted to try to put the banjo together in a way that both replicated Jenes' style and brought forth my own influences as well.

I'm currently working on replicating some of his tailpiece and armrest designs.

Jenes is a real hero of mine and I would have loved to have had the chance to meet him

I have a bunch up on my homepage here on the hangout. I have a few albums showing the build as well as some posts on my blog. Check out the album, "Cottrell Banjo Now" for the most recent pics

There's a group of three of us that call ourselves "The Banjo Boys" who have started building three more of these Dynaflow wonders. Check it out at

I found one! My torque converter ring #1 arrived via USPS today. I had to make up a car for it - the guy knew that folks were using these for banjos, and he was on the alert. Being a car guy, I did not let this phase me, and gave him all the specs he needed. Now the work begins.
