Hi. I'm Susan, and I'm a claw hammer newbie. I've had my banjo almost a month and love it! I have yet to miss a day of playing even if it's only 15 minutes. I don't have a teacher, I'm just working off YouTube and David Holt's beginner DVD. I've got the bum-ditty down and I'm working on chord changes. I can keep a reasonably steady rhythm, change chords (most of the time) and sing all at the same time, if I don't go too fast.

The rhythm playing is much fun and WAY beyond what I thought I was capable of doing with any fretted instrument. But I want to begin to find some melody - I'm just not sure how to start. Holt's DVDs seem to jump from basic to advanced. So I need to find the bridge between bum-ditty chords and finding melody notes.

Over all I'm happy with my progress. I'm a long time hammered dulcimer player and an intermediate fiddler but I've never played guitar or any other fretted instrument and I sincerely though I was lacking the strumming gene! But so far so good. I've just got to keep it going, and that's why I'm here!

	somarmd says: 1/21/2012 7:18:10 PM Hi, I'm new too. Just started last week. I'm working on bluegrass from the Academy of Bluegrass (very cool cite) and Patrick Costello learn to frail package. I'm very pleased with both programs. Good luck..:)
