Old northern Michigan maple 3-ply rim blanks. The wood was harvested near Watson, Michigan in the 50's and purchased by Bob Cathey. Bob made tone rings and supplied wood to builders years ago under Northern Musical Instrument Supplies and advertised regularly in Bluegrass Unlimited and Banjo Newsletter.
I bought quite a bit of wood from Bob, both straight grain for rims and quarter sawn figured maple for other uses. I shipped wood to Jimmy Cox in 2009 and had him form and cut rims to his standard dimensions for a blank 3-ply maple rim. The rims are 2-1/2" tall, 7/8" thick with enough wood to finish to a 11" rim.
This was a one-time project and there are only a few left.
