Here's a story I read today. They must of had the fire trucks on standby.

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A Grammy-nominated banjo player has set a world record, but he's already planning to break it.

Todd "Banjoman" Taylor established the first-time record in a solo performance of "Feuding Banjos" on Jan. 31. He finally received confirmation from Guinness World Records on Tuesday.

"It was awesome," Taylor said. "For a while, I was like: 'Come on, people. Confirm this thing. I worked my butt off for it."'

"Feuding Banjos" was originally composed in 1955 but reached greater popularity when it was featured as "Dueling Banjos" in the 1972 film "Deliverance."

To break the record, Taylor performed the song in front of witnesses at his Palm Bay home.

He played along with a drum machine set at 210 beats per minute.

Taylor said he hopes to keep practicing and break his own record next year.

I'm normaly all for the fast stuff but that is too fast! He's hardly got the timing, and the tone is to fast to hear anything good. But that's just my two cents. :)

I agree, he totally misses part of the song. I think Guiness should listen to the original and compare to Todd's.

He was either missing part of the notes or I just didn,t hear them one. This should be a good example to a lot of pickers that are always worrying about playing so fast. Of coarse I know todd knows better, that he was just trying for the record.

Well, yeah, I think thats the point. This was all about speed. It wasn't meant to be a tasteful arrangement. And it WAS fast, though I would like to see Jens Kruger take a stab at it.

Well, my 2 cents worth is ....no doubt he can play fast, but as for the world record...well good thing no one at Guinness plays banjo. At the 1:52 mark he left out an entire measure to catch up, then fell behind by atlast one bar from there to the end. Todd is a great player, but trying to set a a world record with "dumbed" down version of that tune I believe does the Banjo an injustice. How about something like Earl's FMB for Guinness, that would be a standard for all to reach for.
Anyhow like I said, just my 2 cents worth........Chris

I have full admiration for Todd and what he did. I will gladly admit to my "immaturity" liking super-fast picking and have been lucky enough to see Jens Kruger burn up Waterfall and Orange Blossom Special first hand. I have also written on here before how much I would like to see a Jens vs. Todd speed competition.

There was an interesting letter in this months Banjo Newsletter regarding the record attempt. If I may quote:

"Dear Donald, I read in the April issue about Todd Taylor and his inclusion in the Guinness Book of Records. I just wanted to mention that there are several recordings that have banjoists playing at speeds that exceed 210 bpm. On several of Bob Daniels's albums, he plays tunes between 250 and 275 bpm. And on the "Duelling Banjos" soundtrack, Eric Weissberg plays "Rawhide" on the final pass at about 230 bpm. At first I thought this music was a trick (perhaps playing it slower and then speeding it up on the master) until I heard both Weissberg and Daniels play live (at different times in different places) and I can attest to the fact that they really can play that fast. Thanks for a great publication. - John Schumacher, Milwaukee"

275 bpm!! Lordy, that I would like to see. Who is this Bob Daniels guy?

Folks

The POINT is

Todd and only Todd did the four years of leg work involved in getting this whole thing put together

Only Todd has performed under the gun so to speak with all the preasure involved

And what you hear fully passed the qualifications, Todd had NOTHING to do with the song choice or the rules of how it was done at all, he was in a poisition of following orders or forget it

This is a SPEED event, focus... its not about tone, you dont expect truffles on your big mac, but it better on the fois gras you spent fifty bucks for. You dont expect the fois gras to be in a paper wrapper waiting for you but the big mac better be

Even Todd has played and recorded faster but again only he has gone to the effort to get it down and official

There is no rule that forbids anyone from out doing him tomorrow and until it happens he deserves quite a lot of respect for putting the effort and succeeding

Well there's something to be said for setting a goal and accomplishing it and I guess congrats are in order on that account. But as I've said it before and I'll say again.(and OK, it's only 1 person's opinion!) - with music, as with technology, just because you can does not necessarily mean you should.

Robert

I dare say if you had the issues that Todd has to deal with you might very well appreciate the fact that you can still have the health to set and finish a project at all and do it world class... and have the strength to look to tomorrow

Id say that says it all in my book, dont know if I could match that courage myself

My hat's off to anybody who sets a goal and works hard toward it.
It is not for me to say whether or not the goal is unworthy.

With my memory for old jokes, and my tendency for metaphors, several comparisons come to mind.
Like the guy who said that he used to enjoy a romantic evening, sitting on the sofa, snuggled up to his lady love, in the warm glow of the fireplace. Says that, since he replaced the firepace with a microwave, they can have a romantic evening in seventeen minutes.

Next question:
Any banjo pickers out there working on a Guinness BPM record for the "Minute Waltz"?

There are times to knuckle down, focus, and be working on a Guinness record, and there are times to just sit back, relax, and slowly work on a Guinness.

And there was the man who named his dogs Guinness, Murphy, and Shirley, so he wouldn't have to worry about them straying off.
He says that he heard the Bishop reading from the Scripture, and the message was:
"Shirley, Guinness, and Murphy shall follow me all my days."

To the untrained ear it might pass. However, those who know the song, know he missed parts of it and got out of time. I don't know how Guiness can approve something with these noticeable errors.

Anybody that is willing to go through the time and effort to try to break the record is more than welcome to try. This was about speed and speed only!. As Scott said, Guinness laid out the rules, one banjo playing Dueling Banjos. Todd would have loved it if he would have only had to do one part. But then again...Guinness set the rules. Todd was also sick, but had to go through with the performance. Not to mention Todd's muscular disease...

Todd is a great picker...good enough to be recognized by being nominated for the Grammys three years in a row.

Ok, toned down, I just don't get the problem people are having with this. Since this started I have heard several people say they or someone they know can do it faster than the record that was set, but how come no one has done it before in front of the committee? They must be pretty tough. Oh well we'll see in a year or so if anyone steps up and gives Guinness a call and beats the record.

I was in a banjo marathon for Guiness back in 1972 or 1973. I lasted about 8 hours in a room full of banjo pickers. The guy who won wasn't very good at the time(he went on to become a decent banjo player, I think) and it seems like he was addled or shell-shocked by the experience of over 34 hours of non-stop banjo picking. They were allowed to take potty-breaks at designated times, and it didn't matter what was played as long as the fingers were moving and the strings were making noise. He did win an RB-250, though. I decided that setting records isn't something I care about, other than being the world's best grandpa.

That marathon was a promo for the movie "Banjo Man" staring Earl Scruggs. The picker who won in San Diego was a fellow named Lance Subskie...with over 100 hrs of playing. The winners went on to play the marathon in Las Vegas. Lance sold his RB-250 for money to make the trip to Las Vegas. I never saw anything about it in the Guiness book and I did look.

LOL, HEY IM ALL READY GETTING READY TO BREAK MY OWN RECORD, ITS A VICTORY FOR ALL THE SICK ETC PEOPLE WITH RARE MUSCLE PROBLEMS TO LET THEM KNOW YOU CAN MAKE IT, O DID I MENTION IM A WORLD CLASS 3 TIME GRAMMY NOMINATED ARTIST, LOL, LOVE YOU ALL, I EVEN LOVE ALL THE JELOUS PEOPLE AS WELL,

Todd, you aren't playing it correctly at this speed. I'd concentrate on getting it right at this speed before bumping up the metronome.
No, you didn't mention you were nominated for a grammy. Never heard that one before (sarcasm).

Why all the picker hatin? Regardless of any disabilities I think it is pretty cool. When I was a kid I wanted to be in the guiness book of world records doing anything. I would lay awake at night trying to think of a record that I could break and how I would be famous and have lots of friends. Obviously I never came up with anything to make or break a world record, so I can enjoy Todd's record that he worked hard for. Say what you will about being off time and what have you I still think it is cool. I can live my childhood dream vicariously through Todd.
Be Blessed

Glenn! sorry you got work up. If you beat Todd's record. I will be happy for you. I was not angry with anyone. The sense iwas trying to make was that any music played at 210 BPM is not much. I give Todd credit for world record. Some dream' some just talk. some breake records.

555Glenn - Posted - 05/08/2007:  23:19:57

I put tods rec on studio rec pc..Quantiumized it.. Checked it close.. He did not play it at 210. most was junk picken. What pros call tripleling. you can play it at 105 with the same effect Todd did. then turn the metronome to 210 and its the same picken. I had three people from UofL with master degrees in compisition check it and they said the same thing.

I never wanted to be a record setter. My glory came from 2 honorable discharges from the USAF.. An I played banjo in the back seet of an RF4 phantom flying from flordia to germany at 1,100 mph. So Im the fastest banjoist in the world. when todd does that then let me know.

It does not supprise me that Guineness has no one to figure this out. Which means Its all about the person..Above all to thi own self be true. If you cain't do that then expect people to call you out on it. As many have.
Any one can import that recording into rec software and count it for them self.

PS why would anyone want to be the fastest.

What I'm seeing here is jealousy, pure and simple. Todd did it, nobody else has, and now a few people are trying to tear him down. Todd set a record, recognized by Guiness, for picking speed. He has proven by that he's fast. He has also sold tons of cd's and been Grammy-nominated. He has proven by that he's an excellent musician. This whole thing has been discussed ad nauseum on here and it appalls me that folks are still being critical of this. If you feel like it's not much of an accomplishment I'd suggest seeing if you can replace Todd's name in the record book--and if you don't want to do that just let the man enjoy his accomplishment in peace. Todd is justifiably proud of his achievements and I'm happy for him.

Todd's a quality guy and a class act and I consider him a friend. He's wronged no one on here and yet I keep seeing these negative things. What ever happened to simply congratulating someone who did good instead of slinking around muttering "I could have done better"? I just don't understand this. I'm sort of embarrassed for these folks who keep talking about how much better they are with absolutely no way to back it up. Call the Guiness people, set up a trial, and break the record. I'm sure Todd will be the first guy to congratulate you and I'll be somewhere in line as well.

Jadie peged it of course

Perhaps here is a good time to announce some things to those reading this

Ive just been informed that a couple people here on the hangout have taken their antics WAAAAAAY further than is socially or legally acceptable. Todd has not only had to endure hateful posts on his myspace site by these people but they took it to the level of internet and actual phone stalking and harassement.

Todd has contacted the police in these peoples hometown WEEKS ago and they have monitored the situation and invited Todd to file formal legal complaints against two individuals (both hangout members), which he will be doing

As was said, everyone is entitled to their opinion and the right to state it ... but there is a line

Scott
