Yes that gives me an idea, maybe I'll practice Dueling Banjos for a while playing both parts and then double the speed with some software out there and post it, wonder if will get busted? Hmm, what would I have to tune my banjo to for it to be in G when played at double speed?

Ok, if you guys really want me to post a video of myself playing it at 012 bpm, I will, but I'm tellin' ya it probably won't be all that impressive.

Wow Todd--thats very fast. Amazing what can be done under pressure with a bid guy and a gun next to you.......kinda reminds me of Hugh Jackman in "Swordfish" when he has to crack the computer code in 60 secs....with the guy..... and the gun.....and the girl....and.....and......oh, never mind.....

Let's see if I can write something without coming across in a bad way...

I think the point of much of the criticism comes from the fact that many here have higher standards of what they expect. Those expectations often involve playing with the T's and being perceived as "better" than the listener. If you're just starting out, then I'm sure what happened there was amazing to you, but as the years go by and you actually progress your perspectives will change and you may look back and wonder why certain people amaze you.

Todd seems to be a nice guy, he does play the banjo probably better than your average picker, but that deosn't mean everyone is going to appreciate what he does - especially those that are playing beyond what he's doing. You're just not going to see a lot of the "more better" players impressed by someone playing fast - for the obvious benefit of publicity.

I knew when that post went up the "gun slingers" would be coming for Todd. I would expect and hope he could careless what anyone thinks. He is a Pro of the highest quality, praise and taking he heat is all in a days work for him. I view this no different then a horse race or sports event if you got the goods bring it ....if not stop whining about what someone else has accomplished.

Great stuff! No matter what you do, if you do it well, there will always be a few detractors (who couldn't come close to doing it as well) waiting to snipe you from the sidelines.

I wonder why if it's so boring, the detractors aren't going and finding something more interesting to do.

I think it would be great to be listied in Guiness as the World's Fastest Banjo Player. Todd Taylor is pretty goo as well.

I agree with a couple on here that while this may be impresive and its nice what does it do? Any instructor will tell you that speed is not important in most situations, and at what point does it mingle together and become to fast to be pleasing? To each his own I guess but mistakes were made and the playing wasnt that clean although Todd can play very clean. I guess Im saying to play that fast usually takes something away that is not good and thats clean picking.

To the uninitiated the thing that stands out the most about the banjo is SPEED. Remember when Earl was on the Beverly Hillbillies and people claimed the film had been speeded up because no human could play that fast? Of course, pickers know that Earl could have done it much faster had he wished and the piece required it. Although raw speed isn't the goal most of us aim for, to the general public that's what stands out about the instrument. I don't know if Guiness would recognize a record for "most melodic" or "most on the beat" or whatever. They want to measure speed.

I guess Todd set a world record because he thought it would be cool to set a world record. You have to jump through all kinds of hoops with the Guiness people to get any kind of record recognized, and he mangaged to do all that. I don't know if it has a special or profound purpose, but wouldn't it be neat to set a world record--even if it were in tiddly-wink flipping. This doesn't really comment on Todd's skill as a player or musician--he has proven that with his CD releases. It just shows that when he gets in the mood he can pick it really fast. In the end, this places banjo picking in a positive light and brings it in front of the public eye--and gives all you guys out there who think you've got chops a target to shoot for. If you're not impressed by it, beat it.

"In the end, this places banjo picking in a positive light and brings it in front of the public eye--and gives all you guys out there who think you've got chops a target to shoot for. If you're not impressed by it, beat it."

I disagree. This is not the "positive light" that banjo playing needs. It's the very type of thing we're already infamous for - loud, fast, obnoxious...

Those with "chops" have no desire to play like or as fast Todd - so there is no target. And just like I'm not impressed by the guy that can eat 100+ hamburgers I have no real reason to beat anything.

"You have to jump through all kinds of hoops with the Guiness people to get any kind of record recognized, and he mangaged to do all that."

As I understand it Guinness has yet to approve the record. I'm not saying they won't accept it, just noting the point.

while the ability to play a whole tune, any tune, at this speed is a feat, i don't think this version of dueling banjos will sell many albums let alone be nominated for a grammy.

and yes, i would like to be in the guiness book (for drinking guiness though, not banjo playing).

What is a positive light for a banjo? What do you guys expect for the banjo - to see a banjo player standing beside the bass player in every band - in every symphony - a banjo band in every high school? How about letting it be what it is and not worrying about the ends so much. Who exactly is it that we're trying to impress, anyway? Julliard? Face it that the tone of it is annoying to a lot of people because it's sharp with no sustain, and if you corrected those things, it would be a guitar. It's a matter of the instrument, and not the specific tone or arrangement, and I'll bet you can attract a lot more interest playing to the strengths of the instrument than trying to compete against a lot of other instruments that are much better suited to mainstream music.

it's disgusting how many negative posts there are on this topic - it wasn't even posted by Todd - and especially disgusting that at least one of the negative posts is from another "professional", and that's not directed to the post just prior to this one.

Wow! Well said PPO, couldn't agree more. It's a banjo, that's what I fell in love with, not a guitar. Oh well I wipe my hands of it, I have bookmarked the links that banjoboyone provided for us, I will enjoy it, I have sent it to friends. If I want to hear Todd play slower and more meaningful I will listen to his CD recordings.
The intent of this record wasn't to provide heart felt music to the masses, it was to play FAST! He did it under pressure, hats off to you Todd. Hmmm seems some have forgotten that Todd doesn't try to set records with every recording....

Come on, guys. Let's rope this in, here. No need to implode.

There are some fantastic players here. But we're not all alike. Nor do we all have exactly the same tastes (let alone, abilities). We're a group that appreciates and share a common interest. When a part of our community prospers, we all feel a glow. Same happens when we come to each others defense. And from that commaraderie, we all benefit. So lets continue to celebrate each other's accomplishments.

And for those that are interested, there's nothing wrong with a friendly rivalry. Bring it. Let's see who can raise the bar. And while you're at it, what other bars should be put in place? Any other Guinness Records to be defined and set?

i certainly can't play that fast. i can't even sustain a forward roll that fast for more than a couple measures. i can't play as good as todd period. i can admit that without hanging my head.

i'm just not overly impressed by that rendition of dueling banjos.

to be honest, it has nothing to do with todd's ability. that song isn't meant to be played that fast. guiness picked the wrong song for their record books.
i honestly only recognize the tune in a couple of different spots. the rest doesn't even sound like the song i know. at least not to me. i don't think that song can be played by anyone at that speed and sound good. so don't take it as a personal slam at todd.

congrats on your record todd. i guess i should have put that in my first post.

To me some of the posts on this thread smack of plain bad manners. I try to never put someone else down and especially if it's for an achievement THEY are personally proud of. People seem far ruder on the internet than they would be in person. I can't imagine anyone saying some of the things said here to Todd if he was telling you about this record face to face. Knowing he will read the thread I thought people would be able to contain themselves from making critical comments.
If a professional picker with more talent and proficiency than 99.9% of other playershas gets this kind of criticism, what chance do the rest of us have?

No wonder the sound-off forum is always pretty quiet.

I want to come to the defense of all those rude people. First though, before I do, let me say that I don't agree with them. I think Todd's accomplishment is pretty neat. Once in awhile people like to see you burn up the rubber on your banjo tires, and while it may not result in great music, per se, it's still great fun and very entertaining for an audience, and an accomplishment in its own right. And as someone said earlier, part of his accomplishment is the production side of the effort, negotiating with Guiness, setting up the trick, even having the guy with the gun standing ominously in the doorway. It demonstrates that a well executed publicity stunt can show some genuine artistry in the doing of it. So hats off to Todd, and what's the harm in it. About ten years ago, I edited a collection of cartoons from the early pages of the BNL. Pardon me while I quote from my preface:

"Ever since the five string banjo was invented, every succeeding generation of pickers has produced its accomplished virtuosos whose exceptional skill and craftsmanship stand them apart from the average journeyman player. These versatile talents seek to achieve a level of musicianship that reaches well beyond the confining bounds of the banjo's humble beginnings, in the hope of demonstrating beyond doubt that virtually any kind of music can be played on the banjo. They seek nothing less than to prove to the world that the five string banjo is a serious instrument."

"They are, of course, wasting their time. Anyone with any sense knows that only a fool takes up the banjo. Banjo pickers are all, obviously, indolent idlers who will abandon work, family, and community for the opportunity to pick just one more tune with another similarly feeble-minded musician. It has always been so, and it always will be. Heaven help us when we start taking ourselves too seriously."

Still my manifesto. On the other hand, I also think Todd maybe needs to toughen up a little bit. In my opinion, once you step out of the shadows into the public eye, your efforts are fair game. Period. Nobody gets a pass in the real world, brothers and sisters. Criticism and even ridicule come with the territory that Todd crossed into when he called up Guiness. Or that we enter when we post an opinion or an MP3 in this forum. Todd's Guiness exercise provided a legitimate opportunity for some worthy discussion about the temptation endemic with banjo pickers to play with excessive tempo, which got everybody riled up and thinking about the issue, to one degree or another. And that was also valid.

So far, I have seen only a few taboo subjects on the Hangout, where criticism is verbotin. Instead, we battle fervently over sacred cows every day, whether the subject is Earl Scruggs, Gibson banjos, Bela's genius, Ken Perlman's melodic clawhammer, whatever. And a lot of good insight comes out of it. So I say, let a hundred flowers bloom, let a hundred schools of thought contend. I woud only draw the line at libel, and maybe obscenity. If the big-name professionals insist as a precondition of their participation that they be treated with kid gloves, then I say good riddance to them. Go post on their fan sites if you want to read pure sycophancy.

If you can't take the heat, stay out of the... sunlight.

Bring it on!

P.S. I think the Jukebox has pretty much replaced the Sound Off forum. The Jukebox is carrying a LOT more stuff now than just a few months ago, so I don't think there is a shortage of folks willing to post recordings. A really great feature.

Little Roy Lewis.

I think he uses this same tune on stage with Little Roy Phillip. Can't be too far behind the way they go. But I know it's not that fast.

Good job Todd we have enough sence to know it was speed you are after here.

Now if I can just get this fwd roll down I may try it.

What I see on the hangout are two types of posters--one group is here to discuss banjos, talk about construction, setup and playing; help give beginners or people in need advice and pointers, and occasionally throw in a thoughtful opinion on a controversial topic. We need all of those we can get.

On the other hand, there is a much smaller group that seems to lurk the topics looking for something to criticize or poke fun at, while never making a meaningful contribution of their own. You can peruse their last 20 posts and all you will find are criticisms and negativisms about almost anything on the hangout. These are the kind of people who could suddenly stop posting for a year--and nobody would notice.

In the real world I wouldn't associate with these kind of folks. Unfortunately on the hangout I can't filter out who jumps into the conversation, so if I want to participate I'll just have to live with them. Sort of like a fly buzzing around your head--life is full of small irritations that don't amount to a hill of beans in the long run.

Everyone knows that cars are to drive the kids to soccer games in. I think it's a shame that some folks have to sully the image of the automobile by making it go fast and even to compete in attempts to set speed records. Why those fast cars don't even look like my Chevrolet sedan. And the ride isn't smooth at all and sometimes at high speeds they slide sideways and do all manner of unseemly things. I just hope the children don't see it.

What crap? I think those that have had less appreciation of the deed have been quite civil, and level headed even in the onslaught of posts telling them how awful they were for not just being blindly agreeable. Perhaps this is the crap of which you speak?

Once again, I guess I'm the one with the messed up opinion, however it's mine and I stand by it. You're all welcome to like and dislike what you wish and state it as such - afford those that don't the courtesy to allow them to express theirs - especially if it's civil.

Nobody said that he sucked or that Todd really dont know what clean and fast banjo picking is,or that this whole thing is just a publicity stunt,or that his band sounds like a lynard skynard rip off....NO nothing like that at all....
Come on....

Its easy to get all riled up about this but, it is, what it is! Its a banjo FORUM! Folks here practice for hours and hours a day! Not to mention the teachers we have on this site.
And for them to not chime in and say something about the lack of clearity in the picking is just crazy. get over it folks...you may forget there are REAL people that read this NOT just fans of Todd.

I GOT A QUESTION: Who were the judges? What were their quaifications to judge?
ok 4 questions....
Were there any others that this speed contest was compared to?

Does any one have the capabilities to SLOW this down to a crawl, so that the mass's of BHO can hear for them selves ,what the trained ears of some of the great Banjoists that have responded to this thread, meant. And meant with no offence.

What difference does it make if im a professional? Im not of the "opinion" that my opinion means more than anyone elses....so what makes what I said "especially" disgusting???..it wasnt SERVED up with special sauce.
I didnt tell you amateurs that your attempts to comment on a "professionals" work was especially disgusting did I?

I just thought the "stunt" was lame and someone telling me i need to go win a grammy and sell albums to impress them was VERY silly...so i was nice and retaliated with humor. I dont think ive been rude at all. I aint the one telling people they need to be nominated for a grammy before they can have an opinion and telling people to "beat it"...

Jdmatthew, if you go back and check my last 50 posts there is a LOT of HELPING coming from this banjo picker...more than most people on this thread...ahem, thank you very much...i sure dont sit around talking about cryogenically frozen tone rings and what picks to get.

Hey WildJimbo:

No offense to you, but I've always thought that contest pickers were kinda "cheesy" and "egotistical" as well. Therefore, I don't see where what Todd Taylor did was anymore of a publicity stunt than somebody entering a banjo contest and trying to win 1st Prize. That's only my opinion of course. I'm sure you will disagree, but I really don't care.

Todd is a fine person and it wasn't him that started this thread to gloat about his accomplishments. All he did was try to chime in and answer some questions and provide feedback once the thread was in progress. As a result, he gets grilled by the masses here, which is grossly unfair.

jdmatthew and maverick nailed it 100% and I hope everyone took their posts to heart.

BarryB,

You're welcome to your belief that my playing is cheesy, and that I'm egotistical. Hey, I like what I like. You like what you like. It's a big world, and oddly, I've played more than my share of banjo since 1977. Obviously cheesy and egotistical has served me well.

Sorry to edit this so much later, but I wanted to add to this, and it fits here better.

I guess maybe I should just take the comment about cheesy and egotistical and accept that it was pointed at me directly, but you did say contest pickers. That's a large field and covers a great deal of players. Here are a few that have participated in contests with the desire to win:

These are just from Walnut Valley Banjo Contest (3rd Place and Higher):

Lynn Morris
Gary Davis
Scott Vestal
James McKinney
Mike Snider
Yoshihiro Arita
Gerald Jones
Tony Furtado
Mike Bub
Matt Flinner
Jeff Scroggins
Cody Kilby
Charles Wood
Matt Menefee

From Other Contests:

Alison Brown
Raymond Fairchild
Jimmy Henley
Bob Flesher
Greg Earnest
Kristen Scott Benson
Brian Blaylock

Another notable confessed contest player: Earl Scruggs

There are many others.

So, perhaps I've proved the point about contest players being cheesy and egotistical. If that's the case, I'm a proud member.

You know, Im sure Todds a swell fellow. But how EXACTLY should these folks respond?

This thread is titled Fastest Banjo Picker.

Threads here are up for debate not just praise.

Theres an old saying we use here in NC. "if you aint got nothing good to say dont say nothing at all!"

I wonder how many folks listened to that clip and said nothing at all?

But that is a question, just like the ones I posted a few posts up. I dont expect an answer.

If folks wouldnt get so carried away with CORRECTING everyones opinion then this site would be AWSOME! But no.

Let it go boys.

I think its cool when anybody gets off their couch and tries to do something... anything.

Todd made the effort to set a record. He achieved what he set out to do. The rules for setting records are well-known and nobody is saying they never heard of the Guinness book of records before.

So he's in the book this year. Maybe you can displace him. Shoot for 225 or 235. You'd better get your picking small (efficient) and be prepared to do some serious practicing.

As for me, I top out about 144... maybe 150 on a good day. So I won't be in contention.

You won't get in the record books by ripping on each other though.... just by practicing and scheduling an appointment with Guinness.

Randy

My playing is a natural product. Minor variations and imperfections are normal and only serve to enhance it's natural beauty.

My whole point is that Todd didn't come over here seeking attention. It's unfair for anyone to chime in and be critical of him. If you don't agree, then fine. But don't beat the guy up for something that he didn't come on here bragging about.

You ought to contact them instead and see if you could claim the record for the most EXACT posts on banjohangout.org consecutively.

Barry, it makes absolutely no difference that Todd did not start the thread. Once Todd went the route of contacting Guiness and setting the record, he presented a public performance which is fair game for criticism. The fact that Shane "leaked" the information before Guiness actually certified and published the record makes no difference either. It is clearly Todd's intent to get publicity for his career as an outcome of this, and he willingly participated in the thread, until some of the feedback became negative. This is America, folks, where there is a free and deliberately unfettered exchange of ideas, and that is what makes this country different from most of the others on the planet. it doesn't matter whether the debate topic is the war in Iraq, or an obscure cultural sideshow like bluegrass banjo.

Shane wrote: "If some of you only knew that I know about this man, you'd be pretty mortified at your comments. So quick we are to spew criticism instead of encouragement; judgment instead of understanding, when we know so little of another's motivation and background."

Now I am mortified. Coy references like this do no service to Todd, and are just an attempt to lay a "guilt trip" on his critics through a vague reference to some unrevealed adversity that Todd has apparently overcome. Well, if Todd wanted to ask for our sympathy, that was his business to do, not Shane's. So now, thanks to Shane, we are left to guess. Has he overcome drug addiction? Was he sexually abused as a child? Did he have a severe learning disability? Or was he a "poor boy," growing up in abject poverty? If you were going to bring this issue into the discussion, which you should not have, because it was Todd's business revealed to you in confidance, you should have been direct about it, and not try to obfuscate. Still, I don't want to know, unless Todd wants to tell us, which I would bet he doesn't. A lot of us have a tale of adversity overcome, I do too, but part of the successful effort to overcome that adversity or handicap is achieving the ability to engage with the world on its terms, on a level playing field.

In all of this, it sounds like I'm being critical of Todd's Guiness performance, but allow me to repeat myself. I think what he accomplished is pretty cool. The folks here who are nitpicking about it are being humorless prigs, to be absolutely blunt about it. (There, now I've offended everybody. It's a good day when I can figure out how to do that!) But Todd has had plenty of defenders here, and they appear to substantially outnumber his detractors. That is the most anyone can ask for, in the public realm, in our rough and tumble democratic society.
