This thread is inspired by the recent post regarding the Foggy Mountain Banjo album as a learning source. It was my favorite bluegrass banjo album 50 years ago for learning the banjo myself. Listening over and over with no vocals was great for getting the sound of Earl’s picking into my musical brain. Since it is a stereo recording it makes for a great soundscape for using modern software to bring forward each instrument in the mix. Early mono recordings can be problematic for transcribing since each instrument can’t be separated out of the mix.
Here you will find tabs of the complete album with the complete transcriptions of the banjo, guitar, fiddle, dobro and bass. By the way I have found no mandolin at all in any of the album. I highly recommend getting a license for TABlEDIT as it will be able to slow down parts for all of the files and loop any section desired which would be of great benefit for nailing the rhythms and hand positions. I do not provide right-hand indications of fingers as I believe that the player trying to master this level of banjo technique would already have the idea of which fingers to use. The PDF provided shows the information you’ll need to get you to all the songs on the album. I plan on uploading audio files of Earl playing the actual banjo parts at a slower tempo in the future.

Rick,
Amazing, all the back up showing the cool licks that Mr. Scruggs used. I have not found this level of tabs anywhere. Thank you so much!

Hello,

I should point out that it's not at all necessary to buy a TablEdit license to slow down the song. You can do it with the Demo version. You can also do it with TEFview, the free .tef file viewer.

There are plenty of good reasons to register, but not this one ;-)

All true and great product but my reason for posting the slowed down MP3 is so that the listener can actually hear Earl's playing, as I did, using another program to highlight just his banjo. I recommend the paid version of TABLEDIT to all.

Another one!

Hi,

These transcriptions are truly masterpieces. You have no idea how much it pleases me when TablEdit is used in this admirable way.

I'd love to take one as the tablature of the month (tabledit.com/tabs/index.shtml). It's been a long time since we've seen a piece for banjo. What do you think of it?

Matthieu

PS: I'd like to comment on a technical detail in the guitar accompaniment. You should not enter a brush on all the notes of the chord, because TablEdit considers that the brush starts from the note that has this effect to display an up or down arrow.

Matthieu, thanks for that explanation of the brush strokes, I've been doing that wrong for over 20 years! Of course I'd been honored for one of my transcriptions to be a tab of the month. Just let me know which you would like and of course I'll fix the brush strokes!

Hi Rick,

Matthieu doesn't get excited that easily and you've revved him up. This is genius work Rick...Jack   p.s. not to mention that Tabledit is a work of Art and Genius too...J

Hi Rick,

After much consideration, I'm going to choose Bugle Call Rag ;-)

I've already fixed the brushes.

The question now is what tablature layout you want. In my opinion, the string spacing at -4 is too small. Here is a proposal.

Sounds good, here's a 4 page version, just pick the one you feel works best, regards

Hello,

The new tab of the month has been published ;-)

tabledit.com/tabs/index.shtml

I've edited the score quite a bit. And it made me realize (finally) that TablEdit has been doing stupid things for almost 30 years ;-) Like painting a full background where a fret number is going to be displayed when it's so easy to just repaint the line representing the string. As I didn't have the time to make this change, I used the layout where the fret numbers are crossed by the line.

But I've used the new option for representing slides (a simple slanted line instead of the "usual" arrow)

For a hammer-on, you use a connective curve with an "H" above it, and for a pull-off, you use a connective curve with a "Po" above it. Why not use the same type of connective curve with an "S" or a "SL" above it for a slide?

Hi Matthieu,

I'm so happy you chose Rick Van Patten for your Monthly display. Rick is an incredible assest to BHO and makes good use of Tabledit...How are you Matthieu?....best, Jack Baker

@RB3

By default, TablEdit displays "Sl" or any string you define in Options->Preferences:

tabledit.com/help/english/pref...ons.shtml

In this case, I've set the string for slide to null to avoid the white background overflowing "Sl".

The text string is now displayed on a transparent background.

Is it possible for you to program TABEDIT to display the Nashville Sytem numbers 1 b2 2 b3 3 4 etc. in addition to letters and solfege? I  would like to see that as an educational tool for all the genres of music that use your program.

Hi Rick,

I understand that this system is a way of notating harmonic progressions that allows all kinds of transpositions.

It's not clear to me what TablEdit could display automatically from the individuals notes. Could you give me an example of what you have in mind?

Thanks

Matthieu

Rick,

I'm not sure why you want Tabledit to display the Nashville Numbering System. Even many of the Nashville Cats don't know what the numbering system is...People are still having problems reading Tabledit files--I do my best to teach all of my students how to read Tabledit...Jack    p.s. You do fantastic work Rick but on this one, I'm not in agreement. I feel that it simply is not necessary...jb

Here's a PDF as an example, it shows the standard tab on page one and the Nashville version on page two. The Nashville version shows how the song was put together using the steps (numbers) of the Major Scale to build a melody that can be harmonized with the chords in the key. This is all a moot point if Tabledit can't be programed  for this but I think this would be valuable for the study of theory in musical education.

janolov - Posted - 10/10/2024:  12:40:36

First we must agree on what Nashville number system is!. In Rick's example he uses Roman numerals (I, II, V and so on), but the true Nashville system is based on Arabic numbers (1, 2, 5 and so on).

Hi Jan,
I believe that Rick's idea is a good one but it should be in its own category, not Tabledit...Jack
