I have a banjo that is over 100 years old. All I can use is nylgut on it. The first ones I put on were the Aquila 5b sounded fine and now I put 1B on it and it sounds crappy. I did recoat the neck in order to preserve it any suggestions?

I am not familiar with the 5b and 1b designation, but I have Nylguts on a couple of 19th century banjos. Both are fairly bright with decent volume. Head style, head tension and bridges can impact the sound quite a bit. I always experiment with the bridge until I find one I like.

Go back to the 5b?

If the 5b set sounds good and the 1b set sounds bad, why not just return to using the 5b set? Not every change is a good one.

Well, I can't believe I beat Joel hooks to it...but...try those LaBella no. 17's. They're a great string, thin and snappy, very crisp to me. Those strings and Chris Sands nylgut....and original guts of course.
