Seems like there are enough postings about Tabledit that perhaps it would be good for Tabledit to have its own forum. Otherwise the posts could end up in tab discussions, tech talk, or elsewhere.

Thanks Sherry. No doubt the posts would suggest the sensibility. Just a thought since Tabledit has become so ubiquitous in the banjo world.

Hi Ken
I like your suggestion.
It's not easy trying to get satisfactory replies to queries on THEE Official TablEdit Forum. groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ta...ssages/12
Many users here on the BHO have become experts on it's features so it makes good sense to have a separate forum where queries could be answered quickly and not be emended amongst requests for TABs. I tend not to visits the TABs forum much these day's.
It's fair to say that we don't get a lot of TablEdit quires, but I still think there is good reason to separate the two topics.
Rawhide Creek - Posted - 04/24/2016: 20:01:15
I, too, like the suggestion, and I agree with Archie's reasoning.
Paul Roberts - Posted - 05/04/2016: 17:21:17
I agree we need a separate TablEdit Forum.
The current resources for this software aren't the greatest and I think BHO would contribute a service to all musicians if we could create a much-needed library of information. Besides banjo players, it would also be a draw for other musicians who, like myself, google the thing only to find a sparcity of easy-to-use info.
Currently, our Tabs forum doesn't answer this need.
There used to be good videos on how to use TablEdit - by a dulcimer player - but he seems to have taken them down.

I still like the idea.
I assume it would include TEFpad, the iPad version. (I have and use both TablEdit and TEFpad.)

I agree that a TablEdit forum is needed.TablEdit is a well developed software, but most people only use the basic and miss a lot of the possibilities. I would use it a a meeting place where people can interchange and compare their experience, and discuss how different playing licks best is notated in TablEdit.
An alternative to a TablEdit Forum may be to make a sticky. Then all TablEdit questions would be available in one thread that is alive all the time and don't disappear among other threads.
Laurence Diehl - Posted - 05/06/2016: 16:45:28
It sounds like a good idea. I get asked for TAB a fair amount but my TAB skills are very poor.

I love TablEdit from a viewer's standpoint. Honestly, it's cheap and cheery, a great program for tab.
It's worthy of more development and sharing. It works; it's not what I use currently, but I want to learn it.
It's handy and user-friendly, and all that good stuff...
Here's a related discussion from The Session.
Take it with a grain of salt, but remember: some folks read the dots. ![]()

I too remain hopeful that Eric will add this as a stand-alone area. I know it's probably unusual to do something like that because it's dedicated to one piece of software. But I agree, and I think this is one of the most user-friendly and powerful tab *and* music notation programs that could be in the hands of folks like us :)
I've looked at Finale several times and it makes my head explode. TablEdit seems to be developed in a more intuitive way. At least it seems much more familiar and comfortable to me the few times I've worked something up with it. I do see where this is something I could sink my teeth into. I truly believe an area devoted to that discussion could bear a lot of fruit and other goodwill and sharing between lots of folks. I see a lot of positives.
I too want to learn this program, it's been on my list and I've dabbled with it enough to see I want to learn a lot more. Heck, I'll even spring for a licensed version as soon as I deal with a major hardware upgrade I need to do first.
Yeah, I read the dots too. Sometimes they're actually connected.

I also REALLY like the idea. We all know that there are a group of users, on any forum, who are going to ask simple "how do you..." without an attempt at reading the "READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING" sticky. But... Having that sticky, and a place to keep resources related to learning and using TablEdit, would be a great resource.
Sheri and others with a dose of kindness do a wonderful job of trying to answer questions as they come up, but sometimes it would be nice to know if someone else has run into your "issue" and posted a solution.
I have spent at least a dozen hours learning midi synths, sound fonts and TablEdit, yet my TablEdit still sounds like a carnival carousel.
And... with all respect and kindness, the tech forum on Banjo Hangout would be a great place to start a luddite convention.......
Cheers,
Bob

Here's a live link to the sticky Sherry set-up:
I think an unknown and unstated issue with "sticky" threads is, depending on how you navigate into threads, it's VERY possible to never, ever see the sticky.
For example, I tunnel into threads by sorting the by"Active Topics" in the upper left menu. When you do that, a list of topics is returned. BUT, the sticky is never there unless it's been updated recently. If the sticky topic has no posts for a while it soon disappears like all the other posts. Again, that's when you view the "active" topics, which is the main way I tunnel into threads.
However, if you tunnel into threads by clicking on the the main topic heads (Music Theory, Other Music Topics, etc) then you will see the sticky, always at the top.
So what I'm saying is, a "sticky" is only sticky from one page view, and drops like all the other threads from the "active" view when it's not active. So "sticky" topics are only kind-of sticky.
I think that contributes a lot to them not being utilized. A lot of people will never see the sticky at all. I that's true for me. I rarely click on the Thread headers...

Not wishing to appear negative. I never visit Sticky Threads. Not because I don't like the topic's that are in those categories but by the endless thread that grows bigger with each new post. One quickly gets lost after reading a dozen posts. The best option by far is a dedicated forum.
janolov - Posted - 05/08/2016: 12:46:31
I think that an own forum would require rather many posts. As I can see the TablEdit questions is about 1 - 2 threads per page (per 25 threads). So if you want to convince Eric about the need of a TablEdit forum, the specific TablEdit questions must increase in number. So everyone that wants a TablEdit forum must show that there is a need, not only talk about the need.
A sticky is a way to gather all TablEdit questions in one thread so it easier to found. If we want a TablEdit Forum we should start putting a lot of questions in the sticky thread so we can show Eric that a sticky is a clumsy way to handle all the TablEdit questions, and an own forum is better.

As I said Sherry I don't wish to appear negative. I was just trying to add value to the conversation. As a Webmaster myself I know it's no more difficult to add a Forum than it is to create a Sticky. If a Form was there people would use it, traffic to the website would increase as a result.

I agree with Tam Zeb, we need a dedicated forum for TablEdit on BHO.
Here's an opportunity for BHO to provide an important service, which (to my knowledge) does not exist anywhere, and is a big need. It's kind of amazing that there exists such a hole, but filling that hole could be a big accomplishment and a great feather in BHO's cap.
The fact that TablEdit is a tremendous resource - but the resources for understanding it and conversing about it are sorely lacking - is reflected by the strong enthusiasm on this thread,
To create a dedicated forum about TablEdit on BHO, where procedures can be better documented and explained, where we can help guide each other on the path to learning this vital resource, would greatly help develop our language skills of tablature, and would broaden BHO's outreach to the world of music by offering musicians in general a place to hangout with us on the Hangout to share insights about documenting music.

I would think that it would have to be a generalized tablature forum to keep all developers happy.

I was just about to suggest something similar.
I have seen several references to Musescore and installed it on my laptop yesterday to give it a shot. Until now I have been using TuxGuitar. TablEdit is not an option since both my laptop and desktop run on Linux and are not dual booted with any version of Windows. I guess I could try the free demo using Wine, a Windows emulator. But this will not allow me to check out features that are only available in the full version. A search shows me others have used an older version, 2.65, with this caveat
"Applications with minor issues that do not affect typical usage "

The sticky that was added in the Tab Forum does not work. Different threads are mixed in the same thread and it can be difficult to address the right problem. If Eric does not give us an own TablEdit Forum (or rather Tab software forum), I think another possibility can be to have the sticky more as an index of TablEdit questions (or tab software questions), where there are links to all TablEdit threads (and the TablEdit questions are posted as before in the Tab forum). A good example is the TOTW sticky in the Clawhammer and Old-time Styles Forum where there are links to TOTWs from 2008 and onwards (and on TOTW is added every week).

I agree that a sticky thread does not solve the issue. It becomes a stream of disparate answers to disparate questions. The thread on, for example, "flying with a banjo" consists of many answers and comments to one basic question and works. Sticky threads have 2 basic purposes; Putting rules of behaviour in one place and acting as a dynamic FAQ. Having said that TablEdit is pretty straightforward and most questions can be answered with a response of RTFM or by finding a tab on the internet that does what you are looking to do. So I can't see it generating enough traffic to warrant a forum. Jan's solution of having a sticky tread to links is great in theory. But who is going to maintain it ? This would mean scanning other forums for Tabledit threads and maintaining the links. Not like TOTW which works the other way round. Maybe a forum on music software in general, covering all tab editors, slow downers etc that we use would be the answer (with a sticky thread defining the scope of what is meant by "music software") ?

The Tab Requests and Discussion forum seems like it should work fine for what you're wanting. Like the description says, "This is the place to make your tab requests known and to discuss tabs and the making of tabs."
At a quick glance I see 5 software-related topics that have been replied to in the last month on that forum. For me that's just not enough tab software-related discussion to warrant a dedicated forum.

Eric, I think it may be a "chicken or egg" kind of thing--or perhaps a Field of Dreams circumstance (I.e., "If you build it, they will come.").
Please reconsider. The worst that could happen is that it would fall into disuse and never be seen again. On the other hand, it could be the basis of something that some of us believe is much-needed.
Paul Roberts - Posted - 06/04/2016: 13:52:00
There needs to be an exclusive forum for TablEdit that serves in a way the current offerings do not; a way for people to interact about their experiences, compile data and organize and present that data in an easy-to-use online resource.
A well done WordPress blog - dedicated to TablEdit - seems like a viable option, if we can find the right person to oversee it.
TablEdit is the trick setup for banjo players as well as the go-to for musicians of all kinds. I suggest we open the discussion to the entire musical world and get a cross-fertilization of approaches.
I would suggest that the person who heads up such a blog have the necessary Internet skills, as well as the ability and interest in developing ongoing text and videos on the subject.
