You are invited to submit a Tune/Song of the Week Please join the T/SOTW crew.

NOTE-03/24/2011: BanjoJudy has passed on the role of keeping track of volunteers to J-Walk. If you want to volunteer, send him a private message through his BHO account. What are the requirements?

1. Volunteer (see # 6)
2. Come up with a tune or song, doesn't particularly matter if it is common or uncommon, but it should be interesting (see # 5).
3. Provide several links to versions in any of the following formats: sound, video, standard notation, or tablature. There is no requirement for any of these formats, but as many as possible is good. If you cannot find on-line sources, it's OK to list favourite CDs, DVDs, or books.
4. Post the tune and info around the Friday of the week (Note: a day early or late is OK, but folks get antsy if it doesn't show up by Friday). Give it a subject something like like "Tune o' Week - Jan 1 2009, Molly put the Kettle On." (Note: using TOTW saves some space for your tune title, ditto for using DD/MM/YYYY for the date) Monitor your posting so that you can help with any discussion that might show up.
5. Tunes can be interesting for many reasons. They may be commonly known chestnuts--but what is the history behind them? They may be uncommon tunes--where did you learn of it? They may just be fun to play. They may have odd titles or amusing lyrics. They may be associated with a particular tuning or be useful for demonstrating a particular technique. They may just mean something to you personally.
6 - CONTACT THE ORGANIZER! Send a private message to J-Walk and let him know you can do a tune of the week. The preference is always for first-time presenters, but repeaters are OK also.

My feeling is that if the tune/song is interesting to you, then you can make it interesting to a large enough audience to make it worth posting as a "Tune of the Week." (as long is what makes it interesting does not violate the BHO rules)

Also, don't feel required to post your own version if you are a "newbie" or otherwise uncomfortable with recording yourself. The TOTW community will most likely be happy to provide versions & commentary.

TOTW Index

Here is an index of the Tunes of the Week. I'll update this as each one becomes available. We are almost always in need of volunteers, and there are guidelines and info down below the list of tunes. You are invited to help us out.

Also, there is a similar index over at the Fiddle Hangout for their TOTW.

I have created a sortable version on my personal site at vrteach.org/totw. I'll keep that synced with this list. Also, if you go to vrteach.org/totw/export/xls you should get a downloadable version of the list in MS Excel format.

If you join the TOTW Announce Group, and choose to be notified when new items are linked to the group, you will be notified when I (or the poster) links a new TOTW to the group.

Thanks for putting up the Index. If you will be in charge, that would be great - it would guarantee that the thread would have at least one new posting per week, thus insuring its continuation.

Eventually, maybe we'll have our own permanent topic for tune of the week. For now this is a great asset.

So what's this week's tune?

Edit: I copied these up to the first posting, and included BanjoJudy's addition. I also made a few other changes, and that's where I'll make changes in the future.

4. Monitor your posting so that you can help with any discussion that might show up.

My feeling is that if the tune/song is interesting to you, then you can make it interesting to a large enough audience to make it worth posting as a "Tune of the Week." (as long is what makes it interesting does not violate the BHO rules)

#6 - CONTACT BanjoJudy (inquiry@siliconheights.com) and let her know you can do a tune of the week.

I do not have all of October filled, and would prefer new volunteers to prevent burnout of the nice folks who have already posted a Tune of the Week.

Judy

Looking forward to this week's Tune of The Week - don't remember who is in charge of putting it up - so whoever volunteered, don't forget that today is the day to post your tune!

I have a need for more volunteers for the October Tune of the Week. The first two weeks are taken, but there are more than two weeks in October - so, please get back to me via email (inquiry@siliconheights.com) and volunteer.

This is such a great Topic/Thread and those of us who have participated have benefited greatly. Join the fun, follks! Volunteer to do a tune. It is not hard and you'll learn a whole lot by doing it - and gain some banjo friends in the process.

GREAT!!
This 'song of the week' is what I really look forward to.
A truly good use of this CH forum.
Fun, informative, educational. A learning tool that is innovative.
BHO & this CH forum is a treasure trove for us who wish to learn more,
and have no physical resources handy to do so..
Kudos !

Kudos to all who make the Tune of the Week such a treat! It's one of the best things about Banjo Hangout, in my opinion.

When you want genuine music -- music that will come right home to you like a bad quarter, suffuse your system like strychnine whisky, go right through you like Brandreth''s pills, ramify your whole constitution like the measles, and break out on your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose, -- when you want all this, just smash your piano, and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!

Cool, another banjo geek!

I also play around with it and found that I could export it as a pdf, and add it as an attachment. That has an advantage in that I can add it to the first post (the actual index) and keep the length shorter. I'll add that now.

I'm not sure what the best way to do this is, but I think it is a good idea. I'm also wondering if it would make sense to sort the current entries so that the most recent is at the top of the list?
