This is a cowardly entry... sneaking off to a blog rather than fighting it out on a forum -but it does avoid the hullaballoo of the CH forum to post an opinion. Opinions are like belly buttons, most people have one and most are unpleasant when thrust on display in an "in ya face" manner.
Anyway - heres my own navel gazing thoughts
TAB vs. Ear – why is it "OR"? Why not "AND"?
To me it's neither one & both of them in equal measure. Lacking experience and knowledge I can't learn by ear neither does TAB alone speak to me. To learn I need both sources, both aural & literal media. Aural to decide whether the tune appeals enough to invest heavily in learning the tune; literal to understand where the relevant positions are and how this all fits on a fingerboard.
My objective is simple - produce the semblance of a tune that's enjoyable for me & entertaining for others.
Conversely I dislike learning from either & both sources - why can't these tunes just trickle of my fingers like other people appear to effortlessly achieve? Probably because other people are like swans, serenely floating past but their feet are paddling like heck to overcome the current!
Now that I've picked the fluff from my belly button I'm going to pick my banjo, as the latter is both more fun & more productive
