Emily has joined BanjoHangout. Let us be on the lookout for her stolen banjo!

What do you propose doing - calling the cops on anyone with a buckeye banjo in the US? That is all the information we have on the entire theft.

Without the region where it was stolen, and general appearance of the banjo -preferably with a picture, and a serial number, I most assuredly would not make any attempt to have anyone carrying a Buckeye Banjo arrested unless they came to my home bragging about the theft.

Here's part of the info from that facebook link given above in the OP (and there is a photo there):

"I'd like to ask everyones help in keeping an eye out for Buckeye Banjo #18, which was stolen last weekend in Poughkeepsie, NY. It belongs to  _________ and is a 12" curly maple with a brass tone ring and a Fiberskyn head and it has a small f-hole shaped inlay in the peghead. If you have any information about it please let me know or email ____at ____. Thanks!"

Thanks Lyle - indeed all of the info is in the link.  Also, I noticed that Emily posted this about the banjo in the classifieds:

Emily - you're an awesome fiddler (and I'm sure a great banjo player!) - we all hope you get your banjo back!!

We'll get it back! Reminds me of when Jack Klatt's Fraulini guitar was stolen....with help from the net, it was back in his hands within days.

Some of us are not now - and never will be facebook users. When I want to waste time, I do it right here.

I'm not interested in following the current (or past) exploits of people I knew in high school. I have old friends I wouldn't mind seeing again even though I've lost touch with them for now, but not in such a public way. In fact, I have had a couple old friends contact me through email in the last few years, but I really have no desire to tell them all about the great party I went to last week, and I don't really care to know the trivia of their lives either.

My current friends were At the great party I went to last week.

OK, but we're trying to help someone get her banjo back, now. Here's a BHO link for you non-Facebookers: banjohangout.org/classified/53072

I am also not on facebook, (for many of the same reasons you've listed) but I do appreciate that many businesses have facebook pages that can be accessed by anyone without requiring that you sign in (and therefore have an account).  Its especially cool for me to look at what banjo builders are up to!

The link I posted should be able to be accessed by anyone without signing in/having a facebook account - which is why I said "should be accessible to anyone - even us non-facebookers" in the post.  Kinda confused why this didnt register on first read....

Anyways - this forum is supposed to be about a stolen banjo, not facebook!  Just getting the word out...

Greg Galbreath - Posted - 08/19/2015:  07:14:43

I agree, what does Facebook have to do with any of this. It's actually a great tool, just like the Banjo Hangout, for spreading the word that someone's banjo was stolen.

oldwoodchuckb - Posted - 08/19/2015:  19:11:28

It is - but I would argue that we are using a considerably better tool right here. It strikes me as worth posting to any local site in the OPs area, as there is a chance someone will recognize the instrument. Facebook is fine too - but there is a pretty darn high concentration of banjo people, and/or people who know what a Buckeye Banjo is and how it differs from a Tenor Banjo on this forum that Don't Facebook.

A full description is always best. A full description of the instrument and the particulars of it disappearing. A picture of the instrument is even better. The goal is to get the banjo back, and for that you want to use all the available tools.

I am happy to announce that Emily's banjo has been recovered!!! The police currently have it, but she should be receiving it soon.

Winged Words - Posted - 10/13/2015:  22:40:41

And note, OldWoodchuck, it was found when the thieves tried to sell it to a music shop and a pawnshop who had seen the details on Facebook. So yah boo sucks to you!

winged words,

Well thank you very much, too. You have now officially joined the short and rather exclusive list of people on the hangout whose posts I don't read. It is nice to have another 10 seconds saved for reading something important.

jenorma1 - Posted - 10/14/2015:  08:27:33

All facebook talk aside, I'm really glad to hear that this banjo found its way home!

My next task is to make sure that Buckeye #159 finds its way home as well (by bringing it back from VA with me this weekend!!)

Death penalty for banjo thieves!

Social media continues to fascinate and amaze me.  It's not a "collective conscious"... but for good or ill, it's amazingly Borg-like.  In this case, it's Karma.  In more ways than one.

I'm really happy for Emily!!

Sorry OWC, no offence meant. Different sense of humour I suppose. No doubt we're both very pleased at the end result, however achieved.

I totally agree with you about social media, it's not for me either. These days I'm mostly off internet forums too. (I keep an eye on Greg's Facebook site and another maker's though, for interesting and up to date snippets they don't always put on their websites.) But Facebook worked here didn't it?

He won't read that apology.

And I took your post exactly as he did. It was vulgar.

Maybe you should PM him.
