The local Public Broadcasting station ( Channels 10 & 36 in Milwaukee) has a HUGE on-air auction every year.
So, this year, I'm donating a banjo.
Since I get NOTHING from it, other than a mention on air, I tried to make it as quickly and cheaply as possible.
NONE of the parts came from a music store.
The body is common pine, the neck is poplar (no truss rod).
The head is made from a 2-liter soft drink bottle, the frets are empty slots with a bit of pencil to make them easier to see.
The strings are 50, 40, and 30 lb fishline.
Let's see if I can line up the attachments in proper order.

Quick wooden pegs.
I have a reamer, so I tried make the pegs the same taper.
Had a drilled & reamed block, to test them as I went.

Looks rustic. It'll probably go for thousands with that signature on there. How 'bout a sound bite?

Did the one you gave them last year ever sell? Just wondering. I remember seeing it on TV with no bids. After all that hard work someone should have appreciated it.

Click the link above the picture of the dog.
She came in and whined for attention during the recording.

Somebody from Ch10 called to see if I'd donate THIS year, and I told them that IF the last one didn't bring in much, I may as well NOT spend the time and effort. It would be simpler to send them a small check.
She claimed to be looking it up on the computer, and then told me it went for a hundred.
Hope she wasn't lying, just to con me into doing another one.

Mike I really like these builds you do - to my mind they capture the essence of what a banjo is about and where they came from
I am a big Terry Pratchett fan and there is a quote I love from A Hat Full of Sky where a character is given a pendent of a horse which is shaped like one of the ancient chalk hill pictures. The stylised outline is described as follows:
“Taint what a horse looks like, it’s what a horse be.”
That sort of summarises how I see your builds if you know what I mean - love the sound clip ![]()
Cheers
Steve

Thankee kindly, Steve.
I first signed on here as "Banjo Maker Mike".
Then I saw some of the devastatingly beautiful banjos being built by people who weren't in a hurry to cobble some crap together, and I dropped the "Banjo Maker" portion of my screen name.
I also am a Terry Pratchett fan.
And one advantage of doing what I do, the way I do it, is the tremendous SURPRISE that I get, every time one of may banjos turns out to SOUND like a banjo!!

Mike . . . I LOVE that recording . . . it sounds like an ancient Edison cylinder recording of some banjo player in 1897 ![]()

That little pup got pretty excited when I played your sound clip too Mike!

Very cool, Mike.
A great idea for a PBS auction. Are you going to play it on air?
mike gregory - Posted - 03/05/2015: 14:35:51
No.
I would LIKE to, but it's against THEIR Rules.
However, I will send a letter to the school which uses the station to TRAIN TV people, and offer to let someone make a video of me MAKING a banjo.

I've been looking at your posts for a while getting ideas on teaching a short banjo making class at the craft center where I sometimes teach woodworking. The class could be no longer than 7 3-hour sessions, which would probably equate to maybe only slightly more time into a banjo than you have into yours. Many of the people would have very little if any woodworking experience. Your ideas make this timeline into a do-able thing!
mike gregory - Posted - 03/05/2015: 18:02:35
Mr. Weitzel, make like a gopher, and GO pher it!
I'll even mail you my step-by-step plans, once I get them straight in MY brain and on to this computer.

Hey Velocity the Plott Hound is a long way from her roots down here where she is a representative of the Official State Dogs of North Carolina, probably she was hoping for some Scruggs style stuff. Going to show your 6 hour banjo to one of the shop teachers where I work, looks like something a student might like to try out as a senior project.

And, of course, when anybody else makes one, they can make a MUCH simpler peghead shape.

You can only see THREE banjos and a dulcimer in the background.
Trust me, there are a few more beyond the frame.
That laser-cut metal banjo picker in the window was a 70th birthday gift from a former banjo student, and current BHO member, Mike Greylak.
