If this is really an original pre-war RB-Granada, it's very spectacular, of course. But it cannot be judged from the one picture if the neck is original, e.g. I doubt if experts here on the BHO can tell from that one picture if this one is pre-war or a reissue Granada...

This will bear further reporting!!!! Seems like we must have plenty of folks around Burlington NC to check it out.

Why does it have a Presto tailpiece? is my first question.

This one also has a Presto tailpiece. Don't know of it's original though:

Terry, I found out about that banjo yesterday from David Shepard, who does Lowes repair work now. He said the banjo was all there. My question to him was why didn't Jim manage to snatch that banjo? I'm thinking this is Dave Osborne's banjo. I've heard his health has been bad lately.

Earls is 9584-3 Sonny's is 9584-2  thats the holy grail lot of RB Granada's

Just curious..what is the price?

I doubt its for sale.

Randy Dishmon - Posted - 01/18/2015:  10:31:34

I've played 9584-1...this one looks quite a bit rougher around the edges than 9584-1.  Last I saw, 9584-1 was in phenomenal shape head to toe...It also didn't have a presto tailpiece on it as I recall.   Clamshell I think.

Who are these people? I guess you know, since you think it's the same banjo.

BANJOBOB549 - Posted - 01/18/2015:  11:35:10

I heard Friday night from a very reliable person of a original Granada 5 string surfacing.  If this is the banjo, The price was $ 400.000.00

Wow - guessing a lot of my North Carolina friends already knew about this one!  If it is for sale, I guess we are going to find out about what an all original RB Granada is worth these days - especially one with impeccable provenance.  400K sounds a little steep, but who knows - been a few years since another has sold - and if I recall, it may have been a TB conversion.  Of course, with instruments like this we may never know the actual selling price.

If this banjo is worth $400K it makes me wonder what Earl's banjo is valued at?

That's the one I thought it was Doug. The Clay Everhart banjo. I first saw it when Dean Clawson had it in the late 70's.

I've played this banjo, Sonny's and 9584-5 and from my ears, this one sounded the least pleasing of the three. I have heard some comments about this banjo possibly leaving the factory as a 40 hole AT.........supposedly, there's a photo somewhere that bears that out........but was perhaps changed to a flathead by the factory in the 30s.

1935tb-11 - Posted - 01/18/2015:  15:00:37

this is how i heard it lynwood,,, it was originally "built" with an archtop,, in 1930.. but for some reason didn't sell until later in the 30s.. at that time it was fitted with a flathead ring before delievery .  it may have been held on to by the factory for semtimental reasons because of the -1 or what ,, i don't know.

the owner has had some health issues but is on the mend,, at this time he may not ever be able to play banjo again.. piled up medical bills is what he told was the reason for selling, which i can totally understand,  i have had the honor to play this banjo several times.  never cared for the set up,, but then again its been put in a safe for years and years. i heard since it was set up properly it has turned into a monster.

i have known the previous owner for 30 years and he is my go to guy for anything pre war,, my PW i have now i bought from him and he has another i wish someday to own.  i used to pick at him about the granada and ask ,, when are you gonna sell me that old junk pile?  he would just grin and say ,, thats my retirement..!!  he is a nice guy and knows old banjos,,,   mills has tried to buy it before sure..  several have through  the years and i would say if not for the medical bills he would not have sold it now,, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I talked to a fellow named Berrier once who remembered it as an AT, but he was up in age at the time, and very well may have been mistaken.  I saw it a couple of times while Dean had it, as he only lived about 4 miles from me at the time, it looked good to me, sounded fine, but not outstanding as I remember it.  Could have been just setup or whatever.  I would love to hear it once again, as I have gained some appreciation for Granada's since then.  400 K is wayyyyyyy out of my league..  It went to Yokleys in fla from Mr Everhart, then to Dean, then to DO, and then to current ( new owner ?)  Provide its the same one of course..

Qarl - Posted - 01/18/2015:  16:07:02

We don't even know if we're all talking about the same one.  We've  heard 2 or 3 guesses so far.

$400K... WOW

Found this story about  a flathead Granada that the author say is probably the second most valuable (his opinion) next to Earl's.  According to the article published in 2013, that it was offered a "few years ago" at Elderly's at about $160K.  Have flathead Granada's doubled/tripled in value in 3-4 years?

As noted in that article, Wade's Granada had all its hardware - including the original flathead tone ring - replaced in the 1960s and again in the 1990s.  That is why it was listed at "only" $160,000.  It was on consignment at Elderly's for several years, if I recall correctly - I think it eventually sold for around $100,000 (if it had still had its prewar tone ring it would no doubt have sold for a quite a bit more - whether $300,000 more I don't know).  That was all before Steve "resurrected" it with a prewar ring and hardware, of course.

The author actually labeled Wade's banjo the second most "highly regarded", after Earl's.  'Regard' equals 'value' in most cases, but perhaps not in this one.  Despite its history and provenance, Wade's banjo is not in nearly as original condition as the 9584-1, and many players and collectors might prefer to have a largely intact prewar Granada instead of a one that has seen all the changes and restorations that Wade's has.

hey doug,, hope your doing well,, BTW got to play a show with fiddler ole henry mabe last night...it was a blast.... the reason i titled the subject as surfaces is that most likely only a few people even knew this banjo existed.  thats all.

If someone got 400K for that banjo, they made out!  I have never seen a Granada sell for that much, ever.  I have seen them sell for 1/2 that, and I think 200K is TOP dollar.

Paul Champion's Granada was 558-1 and was originally a plectrum FE.

When Paul had it the 5 string neck was a H&F by Tom Morgan.

These kind of super rare items are in a class by themselves, to say that any price is unreasonable is really just saying its unreasonable to you. Lots of people want the litter mate to earls banjo.

A few of those people have the money and the want for it, then the price is really what one of them is willing to play. If I had hundred of millions of dollars theres no doubt in my mind I would spend $500,000 for the holy grail of banjos. Of course maybe thats why I will never have hundreds of millions of dollars. All that said the people buying these banjos at these prices are not doing it as in investment, they are doing it because they want to own it with no end game in mind to sell it.

Does anyone know for sure what banjo is this or is this all speculation???

That's a pretty cool find.  It's quite interesting when one of these old banjers surfaces, and causes a bit of a stir.  Breaks up the monotony of the day.

Thanks for posting this.  yes

This is Daves banjo. He let me play it several years ago at his store. I remember picking it up out of the case and noticing how heavy it was. I think it is one number off from Earls banjo. It resides in a very nice hand tooled leather case. one time his store was broken into at night. Things were stolen but the robbers didn't give this banjo a thought. guess it was just an old worthless banjo to them....after that night it started going in a safe. they just didn't know. Dave used to play banjo mostly years ago but during the past twenty years he personal interest had been on the fiddle. Our back yards used to face each other's when I lived in Greensboro.

Guys, if somebody wants to ask, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, and another somebody, wants to pay, ten of thousands or hundreds of thousands, for one of these old chestnuts, fine by me! I seldom question the validity of these banjos, especially the ones that jim mills comes up with! My argument is , and always has been, based on sound, vs, new pro level banjos, i don't hear the $difference, and i question so many others ability to hear the $ difference based on sound, now if you talking about rarity, supply and demand, like other antiquities , now i'm on board! At some point, we have to evolve, and go beyond trying to cure people by bleeding them with leeches, and bags of cut off monkey's feet being swung around our heads and chanting, pre-war, pre-war!(surely someone besides terry gets my humor?) kevin

Terry, a 357 is a hefty bag of monkey's feet, you'll get no argument from me on that, my door answer bag o monkey's feet is a 3 inch custom ruger super blackhawk in 44 mag, not exactly a ham and cheese on rye! And yes, i like old firearms, and love old single action colts, and such, but i don't think there is any better single action handgun built than a ruger, in the same way i love the new Banjos! kevin

well thats one of the few things we are in total agreement on... i am a single action/double action kind of guy too..  never cared for the auto pistols. love rugers,, have a couple ,, a smith ,, and old iver johnson single action cowboy pistol,,, and various others...  best little hunting rifle i ever bought was a composite/stainless ruger 30.06 ... great piece right now i am putting back for a 44-40 original henry golden  boy...    love those things.
