Key of D – aDADE
In this, Tunetorial number 22, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches the tune Step Around Johnny. Though historical info seems to be lacking, it is known to be an Alabama tune in origin.
As in past weeks, he plays the tune and break down sections on the fly. As a bonus, he also focus some on both unplayed string hammer ons and rhythmic right hand development.
This tune is tabbed out in Dan's book (tune 48 in) Old Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo (MB 30224).
You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6.
Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).
It would be great to hear some of your versions so far so post them here for all to hear!

Step Around Johnny was "discovered" by Joyce and Jim Cauthen of Birmingham during their quest to document fiddling in Alabama. They recorded it with their Red Mountain White Trash band on one of the band's CD's. The tune originally came from a family of musicians in the central part of the state. A link has been sent to the Cauthens so that they can weigh in on the origins of the tune.
