Richard was locked out well over a year ago - could be more than two.

I don't know whether he was locked out at his own request or as the result of a moderator decision. Either way, he often got political in his commentary, which led to some friction.

It's too bad, IMO. He often provided excellent guidance for newer players.

I didn't know Richard's music background, but I do know that he was superb at getting under the skin of our more progressive members - always interesting to read his posts.  He was very well read in a variety of subjects and intellectual bullies had a hard time intimidating him.  Wish he were back!

It's possible that we might have locked him out.  Way back then, I don't think members were able to lock themselves out.  However, I do believe he asked for his account to be locked.  I don't remember us deciding to lock him out for any rule breaking.

Richard was very well read, but he never let the facts get in the way of making his case. I found him amusing in his role as unreasonable uber-conservative, but have no idea if it was real or a Stephen Colbert style put on, as so many of his posts more than bordered on self parody. Still, he tended to get into discussions too outrageous for the BHO, and probably moved on to the usenets or some other completely unregulated forums.

For what it's worth, this is what we lowly members see when we go to a member's locked page:

I suspect that the "Member Locked" that the moderator sees is merely indicative of that particular member's account being locked.

I still search him out on the net. he's got some really informative clips for beginners and experienced....he ain't no phony. who cares who and what someone's political views are....two things to remember, no one will make you think against your believes or philosophy no matter how deep the (sht*) argument gets...and I've never heard anyone say your right I'm wrong...so he ain't the only one.

I recall one beginner who posted one of his instructor’s comments about his timing, and asked for advice on how to improve it. Mr. D immediately told him that his rhythm was terrible and suggested he think about quitting the banjo-- before even listening to the audio-clip the beginner posted later that day. I listened to the audio-clip, found that the beginner actually seemed to have pretty good timing, and so I offered the beginner encouragement and suggested a couple of timing exercises. Did Mr. D. apologize to that beginner in any way? Of course not—that concept seems completely alien to him. Mr. D. demonstrated his rude and bullying behavior in many other instances on the Scruggs-style forum.

It seems that Mr. D’s obnoxious behavior has made him unwelcome in real-life places as well. I was talking with a very well-known banjo-player last year and asked if he ever considered posting on the BHO Scruggs-style forum. The immediate response from this well-known player was: “Is that aerospace engineer still on the BHO?”. He then relayed a story of how Mr. D., while visiting the Station Inn in Nashville, had so enraged several people there with his obnoxious behavior that they were about to beat him up. The Station Inn manager told Mr. D. to leave and to never come back.

There is a lesson here for Eric and the BHO moderators: When someone is behaving badly in your establishment—kick them out and tell them to never come back!

The actual response of Eric and a couple of the moderators to Mr. D’s bad behavior on the BHO for several years was—nothing! Their lack of response to complaints about Mr. D’s rudeness and bullying was shameful. And here on this thread we have one of those same BHO moderators appearing to welcome Mr. D. back to the BHO--demonstrating an obliviousness to bad behavior that is inexcusable. 

Let’s see how quickly the BHO staff deletes this post and/or locks me out of the BHO for being too candid.

I have "no dog in this fight" but would just like to offer up ONE correction to part of the statement above.  Please note I am NOT calling anyone a liar!  This is strictly fact from, first hand observation.

Being a VERY regular attendee myself of the Sunday night Station Inn Jam, I can say that I could count on one hand the number of times Richard has NOT been there in the past several years, and have 3-4 fingers left over.  Having the privilege of living in Nashville for nearly eight years, I have been fortunate to get to know the staff of the Station Inn as well as the pickers that come there on Sunday nights.  Despite all our differences, you could not ask for any finer group of folks to be associated with.  Everyone included.

Bluegrass is like being in a large family, not everyone is going to get along with everyone all the time.  Fortunately, when the music starts, all ill will seems to be forgotten.  It is very satisfying to see an entire group of people focused on doing something together that not only pleases them, but also gives pleasure to all the crowds that show up week after week to hear the music.

I agree with Steve.  I think BHO has been a little stagnant lately.  You can check in once a week and the same threads are still front page.  I have several close (banjo playing) friends who have dropped out of BHO the last year or so  because of the new "warm and fuzzy" feel.

You don't have to agree with someone to learn something.  How do you make an informed decision without both sides?  And sometimes in Richard's case the third side!  

All I can say is, bring it on RICHARD!... and let the games begin!

We're still here and we know that the major warming has been in the oceans for the last 2 decades. They are warming significantly faster now than they have been since records of the average ocean temps began in the late 19th or early 20th century.

I'm willing to admit that Man has not been 100% identified as the cause of global warming - but Man definitely contributes something to it. Warming is however a fact - or as much of a fact as there can ever be. Only fools and fossil fuel company employees think otherwise.
