It's tradition.

Half of the folks songs in the canon are about murderers.

The songs aren't usually named after the murderees.

Hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards are somewhat random events but we prepare for them.

And when government officials don't prepare for something like sandy, they get tasked with questions.

Random murders of American citizens occurs 40 times/day.

While random like bad weather, it's not that unexpected

Those that were trying to get through another day in the struggle of human existence have been eternally silenced...we have become so complacent to such horrific crimes that we remain passive and accept such hollow explanations and empty solutions...we are truly sorry:(

These killers are usually people that for one reason or another have a bad life and when they see someone getting their name and picture plastered all over the T.V. and in the news paper for killing a bunch of people it gives them incentive to do the same. If the media would just dwell on the victims and not even mention the killers name, there would be less of these killings IMO.

The identical twin brother of a former supervisor, who like his brother worked at my place of business, murdered both of his young children one day and then turned the gun on himself. Prior to doing this, he had changed the beneficiary on his life insurance policy from his recently estranged wife to his brother, demonstrating just exactly how premeditated his actions were.  It appears he did it more to hurt his wife than to end his own suffering.  The Newtown shootings appear to have some similarities. The shooter not only killed his mother, but he killed many of the people whom his mother was widely thought to have loved, including his brother, his father, and twenty of the students in his mother's school.

It is one thing to hear of a horrendous and senseless act of violence on the news, but it is another when you actually knew the perpetrator and some of his family members. If it is possible, the Newtown shootings were even worse than this incident, not only because of the number of victims, but because indescribable pain was inflicted on innocent, almost random strangers - both the immediate victims and those who loved them. As a parent myself, it is difficult for me even to imagine a worse, more devastating nightmare than losing a child. I am in humble awe of the resilience of anyone who has managed to survive such a catastrophe.

My heart is breaking for these kids, adults and parents. It takes a lot to get to me, nowadays, but this slaughter of innocents just tears me up.

However, I will scream if I hear another "expert" with 20-20 hindsight analyzing the heinous atrocity and the perpetrator. This 20 year old was mentally sick - crazy. Who knows what went on inside his head?

We all would love solutions, and we jump on all types of fixes that support our preconceived notions about unthinkable crimes like this as well as other mass murders. I just read something that made sense to me. I am usually an inveterate optimist, but this statement hit me as realistically pessimistic:

"People are already offering up solutions to this tragedy. There isn't one. Evil people exist. They always will. Some people are simply born broken. They want to rape, kill and hurt. You can prepare for them, look out for them, and do your best to be vigilant, but you can't legislate them or counsel them to not be broken."

Yes, that sounds pessimistic, but it also reeks of reality.

I'm still numb. In shock. My stomach feels like there's a vibrator going that won't stop. Sleep for more than minutes at a time eludes me. Twenty parents in Connecticut were informed yesterday that their child was dead. The same information I received 18 1/2 years ago. I know what these parents are going through. Their lives will never be the same again. Not even close. Some marriages are not going to survive. One partner will blame the other, or blame themselves with the other partner unable to help. Some will turn to alcohol and/or drugs to ease the pain. Some of those will die addicted. There may be at least one suicide. Or at least an attempt. Some will turn away from the God they once had all the faith in the world in. Some will turn to God for strength. Some parents will find their strength in each other. In that new found strength their marriages will be made stronger. Some will experience a combination of some or all of the above scenarios. But because of the selfich and insane act of another human being, 18 1/2 years from now and beyond these parents will still have a hole in their hearts that was ripped out on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, CT. And when they hear of the next incident involving innocent children (and there will be) their grief and anguish will surface all over again. 

Today is the second day. The shock will be wearing off soon only to be replaced by a pain that can't be described. Extended family have begun to arrive to give comfort and share their agony. Tomorrow and the next day these parents will begin making the funeral arrangements. They will choose caskets or cremation urns. They will choose burial plots. They will choose stationery, how large an obituary, type of headstone and on and on and on. It's a surreal experience of seemingly unending questions and decisions that they are ill equipped to make right now. Right down to the, "And will you be writing a check, or do you need to seek financing?" In a few days the funerals will take place (unfortunately with much media ado), extended family will return to their homes and the parents will begin the rest of their lives trying to learn how to live with the emptiness. 

I pray that God gives them the strength they will need to survive this most dreadful and painful loss. I pray for wisdom for our leaders to find a way to curtail future incidents like this. I pray that He sees our nation through this time of mourning.

I find it rather sad that I could tell you the names of the Columbine killers, but not a single name of the victims.
