As I got ready for work, to come and protect our local nuclear plant, I turned on Fox news only to find myself crying uncontrollably for the victims of this brutal horrendous crime. Holes in hearts that will always feel empty for their children who were torn away from them. Beautiful innocent children. I held my girls a little tighter last night. They are one year younger and one year older than those poor children in that classroom. I can't begin to imagine what those parents and families are going through. How do you ever fully recover from something like this? May God be with them...
I read this morning that the shooter had a personality disorder. If so, probably something like conduct disorder. There is oppositional defiant disorder, where someone knows what they are doing is wrong... Then there is conduct disorder, where someone truly doesn't know that what they do is wrong. Think of teenage kids killing kittens with no remorse, for example. This is the make-up of psychopaths, as evidenced yesterday.
Still, I just don't understand why when someone wants to exit this world, they decide to take others with them.

Bill, FWIW I visited a part of the US in September and my impression was of wonderful, decent people in good solid communities. That's not to say elements of things in your link don't exist. But I think there's also a need for perspective at a sad time like this. One specific recurring problem is not beyond solution and hopefully the right person will present who has the courage, strength and enough support to make some tough and controversial decisions for good regardless of the political consequences.

Guns aren't shooting on their own, people are pulling the triggers.
The United States is a violent country, becoming more so all the time. Just listen the the lyrics of rap records, look at TMZ, the Internet site that covers entertainment, where every day there are more articles about celebrity bar fights and arrests for domestic violence. Check out the top video games, they are all about violence and killings, then take a look at the movies we are producing - same thing, violence and killing. This shooter was 20 years old, behaving like he sees on TV, in Video Games and in the news.

Movies and shows glorifying vampires and the violence of every cop show on TV.
It seems the only sure work for actors is a tough streets/cop show or military scenario of one kind or another.

Yes, now is not the time to talk about the problem of gun proliferation ,stricter ,sane and enforceable gun laws and we should never talk about it on forums. We should wait until at least 500 people are mowed down in a public venue, or maybe it should be when there are one of these shooting events every month. When and where should we decide to come together and put the safety of our people ahead of politics?
I cried many times yesterday and last night for those victims and the families and my prayers and thoughts go out to them. As someone who has first hand experience with what guns can do to peoples lives, i can say the best way to honor those kids and teachers lives is to stop sticking our heads in the sand and try our best to stop this from happening again. this means discussing it now.

beegee - "Why isn't anybody trying to outlaw cars?" Because cars have another useful purpose. Few of the people who killed someone with a car actually meant to do it. If a number of people choked on chicken bones, we wouldn't outlaw chicken wings.

Thats great Bob and you are blessed to be able to say that. Lots of people die in 'accidents' of all kinds involving many items. But equating a car 'accident' to shootings is a far stretch, don't you think? You are fourtunate that no one has stolen one of your guns and used it to kill someone in a crime, or that yoor guns didn't wind up in the hands of a child who shot themselves. Unfortunately the statistics for gun deaths show that the vast majority of gun deaths are not from folks protecting themselves from others.
My brother is an example of what happens most of the time. He was a proud owner of many high powered pistols. While on vacation at the beach years ago, one of his 'friends' broke into he house, stole his .357 and shot and killed 3 people. It's just one tiny example that gets repeated about every few minutes, not to mention kids playing with guns and shooting themselves and friends.
On a personal level, one of my good friends back in my teenage yeas wanted to borrow my .22 rifle so that he and his first cousin could traget practice. Later that same day I found out his cousin accidentally shot him and killed him. I asked that they destroy that rifle. On one of the most horrific days of my life, I found my father who had committed suicide with a gun I bought him a a present. He and and and my brother and most of our friends were big gun totting advocates.
Some would hear these stories and determine that it was just bad luck and isolated instances that affected only me. But the sad truth is these stories are just common place in this country. And through all this tragedy with guns, I am not anti second amendment. However i am pro-tough gun law and making us accountable for how insane we are about guns and ignoring there is a problem.
"Guns don't kill people, people do" is a popular saying. It needs to be amended; " Guns alone don't kill people, Gun wielding people also kill people ". I never get involved in these types of threads, and on the off-topic, as a general rule. But this is one that hits me right in the gut and its an issue this country refuses to address. We have a serious gun violence issue in this country . Are we willing to stop the rhetoric and start pulling together to fix it? If not, we'll continue to see these shootings increase and the number of Americans directly affected by gun deaths in their own lives will escalate. I pray to God that we can get over ourselves and our bad 2nd amendment chips and fix this mess.

The best way to respect the lives lost is to talk about it and how to fix the problem. If we start 100 new threads, it will always eventually come back to the issues that caused the tradgedy Figmo. We honor those folks by asking why and how to prevent it in the future. This is the ultimate sign of respect.

Perhaps you could start another thread about your ideas and the school shooting, so that this thread won't get deleted. I perceive, as Figmo seems to, that this thread was set up for well wishing. If you go into a hot bed issue like gun control then it is likely to get confrontational and eventually political. If you get this thread deleted, then you will get all of the well wishes deleted.
My last alternative thread made it less than 2 days.
Could we just start a thread called Shooting in Connecticut 2 or Connecticut Shooting - Gun Control? I embrace the idea of threads growing and changing and I am not telling any of you what to do. I am just giving my thoughts on the matter.

No one is trying to outlaw guns, just regulate them.
By the way, cars are highly regulated as are drivers.
In addition, carrying insurance on your vehicle is mandatory.
Guns are not regulated nor are gun-owners.
I think a simple insurance mandate on gun ownership would take care of a lot of the casual gun owners.
The number of Americans who die by vehicle vs gun is almost exactly the same now, just over 30,000/year

For many years I've known in my mind that people should never think "it could not happen here".
But now I know in my heart that it CAN happen here.

In the light of this tragedy, there were heroes in the classroom and halls. Some gave their lives protecting the children, others locked their charges in, hid them the best way they could, comforted and kept them secure and calm. I pray for those lost, and give thanks and prayers for the others.
