My co-worker Bob is from Danbury Conn.  I just called upstairs and told him.  He said he heard at lunch that a kid was killed.  The latest I just saw said 27 people were killed, 18 children.   Beyond sad.

And before all the "I have a right to own a gun" types start running their mouths, I'll say this...

I grew up around guns...we hunted. So I know how to use them, and respect them. I am not in favor of banning guns.

HOWEVER, NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, unless you are law enforcement or military, should own a semi-automatic weapon.

If you want a gun for protection, get a 6-shot revolver. And if 6 rounds ain't enough to stop an intruder, you need to learn to shoot.

Paddy, I think you are right to ask this, although I understand the feelings that prompted Jason's comment.

I feel sick beyond words. I can't think that prayer is going to do much good. How hard do you have to pray to feel even one iota of comfort over such a hideous thing? If I were the mother of one of those children, I don't know how I could go on living. But I guess I'll pray anyway, because I can't do anything else.

I just read that it is up to 19 children dead. I want to know what in the world possessed this psycho to do something as horrible as this. 19 children who were just going to school, getting ready for Christmas break, living life are now dead. I pray wholeheartedly for the families of the victims and for the children who witnessed what this <insert derogatory swear word here> "guy" did. I just don't understand what could possess someone to do such a horrible thing

I just heard on the radio that the guy's mother was a teacher there.  She is among the dead, he targeted her and her class.  That's just what I heard.  You know the story changes as the actual facts come out.

Words can't communicate all the different levels of tragedy and hurt the families of these children and adults will feel. My heart and prayers go out to them.

These are the worst kind of tragedies, when innocent, helpless children becomes the victims. This guy didn't just develop into a crazed killer overnight. There needs to be some kind of screening method to identify these potential killers and either get them help or whatever before they become killers. The parents and families of these children certainly need our prayers, as well as the other children in that school. They have to be devastated by the loss of their schoolmates.

This is deffinently a tragic day along with the mall shooting. I don't have any answers but until all the facts come in I will withhold any critical comment. I'm sure there was something that pushed this person to do this horrible deed. What that is it will be released. The common link to both shootings is semi automatic weapons and the age.

We all cry and pray for the children, the families and community. This is horrific. I still feel the grief of losing a friend and an acquaintance on 1/8/11. Nothing is ever the same again.

Something that saddens me also is how I know deep in my heart people are capable of really good things, kindnesses and love that touch us deeply, yet individuals are still capable of such wanton destruction of our most innocent.

We can't understand it and won't even if a reason emerges.

The truth is this old world of ours is full of this kind of thing and worse. I sure wish it could be different but it isn't.

I have family members,friends and co-workers that have lost their homes from the hurricane.It's been real tough around here.But this is tearing me up.I just turned off the television because I just can't watch it anymore.The parents and all of the family members including grandparents,aunts and uncles will never recover from this.I lost a six year old nephew many years ago and I still feel it as does the rest of my family.I don't really know what can be done to prevent this sort of thing in the future.This has me extremely sad.

It's unimaginable, incomprehensible, and tragic.  I can't believe what human beings are capable of doing to one another.  I feel for the families involved.  What, if anything, will ever really heal them?  I know they will receive all the support possible from family, friends and their community, because that's what compassionate human beings do.

I remember seeing some one on the hangout mention, Sandy Hook.

I pray their families are ok. It may have been a different state I'm not sure.

I believe that as the facts come out, this shooter was mentally ill. We still attach a stigma to mental illness, that is hard to overcome. We turn our backs, it is something we don't understand, and perhaps don't want to, even when it is a family member. We are in denial, and in doing so we isolate the individual and don't encourage them to seek the help they desparately need.
