I'm down, good lord willing, I'll bring some apogee pre amps and some ribbon mics and a couple of big mics
and we can get some good quality files of some of these banjos. we can tape off the pit and spot all the mic positions so the only variable is the picker and the banjo. Flat with no eq
Sounds like a big time. I'll get some scotch and shine :-) I get to play some of the banjos is my only condition.

 Steve

The correct Steve being referenced went totally over my head......DUH.

With your equipment and knowledge along with the Video recorder we could do this near studio, not quite, but better than anything to date.....

We just need to talk about how to create better acoustics in the room......

AND, how much time you or I will spend in the room. Did not get a chance to see as many banjos on the floor as I wanted to......

This is a little OFF TOPIC, but this project could be fun ...... and helpful to others.

David

I think we would need to employ a guitar and mando player to make these recordings interesting enough to create a CD then sell the CD and give proceeds to Larry Mathis for banjothon

Just food for thought, but I think the videos Dave has been doing are great examples of what this could be. With no other instruments you can hear all the tones of the banjo more clearly.

Yes, but.

You wouldn't get to hear how well the banjo interacts with the other instruments or how it sounds playing backup.

Only some much time guys, banjo thon is only a weekend, do the math on time allowance.
Dave sat all day doing video and didnt tape but handful and missed most the thon.
We better figure out a pretty tight schedule for max results

I had a chance to stop by 'Huber Banjos' on my way through Nashville a few days ago-the shop looks GREAT!! Had a chance to see and pick on the old 'Wade Mainer Granada' a bit while I was there, and am thoroughly impressed with the work they did in restoring it, and the results: It's an amazing sounding banjo with everything I look for in an old banjo in spades..depth, volume, clarity, and that indescribable 'tone'....An original prewar 5-string Granada with such a remarkable history that sounds so incredible...Whoever winds up with it is going to be mighty fortunate indeed..

Having seen and played it now, I'd REALLY Love to see the recording project done with it...

This was a fascinating read!  Most everyone is in agreement that the banjo is now the best it can be.  It is not a complete original, but it never was even in its day when Mr Wade Mainer played it.  Its still Mr Mainer's Banjer, its extremely historical, and I believe the price reflects that its not 100% percent original.  A fabulous job by Mr Huber.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.  It was a great great read and awesome video clips!
